The House and Senate approve compromise legislation authorizing the Defense

Department to spend $178 billion in the next fiscal year - more than half of it for

new weapons and research on such arms as space-based lasers.

Congress approves a $98.3 billion tax increase sought by President Reagan to

help restrain federal deficit and promote economic recovery.

President Reagan fives approval to American participation in the multinational

force that is to oversee the departure of Palestinian guerrillas from West Beirut.

Sparked by a further decline in interest rates, The Dow-Jones leaps some 38.81

points - the biggest one-day game in the history of the New York stock exchange

- ending the day at 831.24

Passing - Neurosurgeon Dr. Loyal Davis, adoptive father of Nancy Reagan. He

was 86.

New Jersey’s highest court upholds the murder conviction

convicted of killing three people some 16 years ago. The

vote was 4 to 3.

Jean Harris tells McCall’s magazine at her New York

prison that “prison is a terrible, terrible way to live” and

that she’s learned such things as “six different ways to

shoplift.” She’s serving a 15-year-to-life sentence for the

murder of Dr. Herman Tarnower, developer of the Scarsdale diet.

“Summer Lovers” in which he and two actresses

romp naked on a Greek Island. He’s currently

appearing in a play titled “A Doll’s Life.”

Henry Fonda leaves the bulk of his estate to his

widow, Shirlee and adopted daughter Amy, but

nothing to Jane and Peter. “I have made no

provision in this will for Jane or Peter, or their

families, solely because in my opinion, they are

financially independent.”

Television news - For now - “Good Morning America” is beating the “Today”

show in the morning ratings. The latter just added Bryant Gumbel to join Jane

Pauley and Willard Scott.

“Eyewitness News” cast. He was host of the NBC-TV

latenight “Tomorrow” show from 1973 to 1981. His contract

is for three years. He’ll replace Ernie Anastos in a

newscast that pairs him with Rose Ann Scamardella.

Passing - Heart attack takes the life of actor Joe. E. Ross (68),

whose trademark was “Oooooh, Ooooh” on “Car 54 Where Are

You?” He was performing a comedy routine in a clubhouse for

neighbors at his Los Angeles apartment complex. Everybody was

clapping and laughing when he leaned over and said, “Something

is wrong. I don’t feel good.”

Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who tells a New

York press conference that the group’s upcoming U.S.

tour will “probably” be its last. He said the group is not

breaking up and will continue to record together.

Daltrey said the group had decided that touring was

“getting too big” and that major circuit swings required

too much time on the road “to make them profitable.” The Who are scheduled to

kick-off their U.S. tour in Maryland in September.

a new album for Stiff Records. His band is Public

Image ltd.

Linda Ronstadt’s new album - “Get Closer” is due out

next month.

Bruce Springsteen’s next album - “Nebraska” will be

without the E Street Band. With 10 original songs, the

album is described as a “folksy, Woody Guthrie-type

record. It’s unlikely that Springsteen will tour solo. He’s

already back in the studio the E Street Band making another album.

Singer Tony Sheridan, for whom the Beatles briefly worked for as a backup band,

files a $1 billion fraud suit against the group, the estate of John Lennon and

various record labels. At contention - 1960-1961 recordings which have been

reissued around the world billed as Beatles records, even though the Beatles did

not perform on the 19 songs in question.

Roy Orbison files a $50 million lawsuit against his longtime manager Wesley H.

Rose contending he has suffered “severe monetary damage” because his career

was mismanaged. Orbison lives with his wife, Barbara in Hendersonville, Tenn.

MTV will mark its first anniversary with a month-long promotion and says a

spokesman, will give the channel to finally air some special programming instead

of just videos. This month, you’ll see exclusive interviews with members of

Fleetwood Mac, a premiere concert by the Go-Go’s, interviews with Mick Jagger

and Robert Plant and more.

The channel says it now has over 500 videos in their library and more and more

clips are being provided in stereo. The channel says it will have about 7 million

viewers by the end of this year. They’ve just hired radio consultant Rick Carroll to

consult. He joins another radio consultant Lee Abrams and Sebastian Casey.

Radio news - San Francisco - Alex Bennett leaves his

morning show at KMEL-FM to join rival KQAK (The Quake)

- a new album rock station.

Mary Turner will leave her night shift at KMET-FM after 10

years and will devote her time to syndication and other products. She hosts 3

syndicated radio shows: “Off The Record,” “Off The Record Specials” and “Rock

‘N Roll Never Forgets.”
