Armed federal sky marshals are ordered onto selected commercial aircraft after a
record three hijackings to Cuba in one day.
Strikes in Poland - The total of factories, shipyards and other workshops shut
down in the Gdansk regions climbs to 88.
Israeli commandos strike into southern Lebanon in their biggest attack against
Palestinian bases in 2 ½ years. 63 are confirmed dead.
Representatives of nine European Common Market nations and Japan have
asked the Speaker of the Iranian parliament to push for the release of the 52
American hostages and allow an international mission to meet the captives,
according to news reports from Tehran.
In Chicago - Ronald Reagan, defending America’s role in the Vietnam War as a
“noble cause,” called for a massive rebuilding of U.S. military forces and
denounced President Carter for “betrayal” of the nation’s veterans.
In July - For the first time in 13 years, the cost of living form Americans did not go
up. But the nation’s economy plunged at an annual rate of 9% from April through
June, nearly the worst quarterly drop in history, reports the government.
First Lady
Rosalynn Carter
says that there is
“no doubt” Billy Carter has suffered because of
the mistrust surrounding the presidency but that
she believes the President’s brother will be
vindicated.
Census Bureau Reports that the number of
families maintained by one parent jumped nearly
80% in the last decade.
Corporate profits plummeted to $19 billion from
April to June as the nation’s economy was hit by
the full force of the recession, reports the
Commerce Department.
A Soviet nuclear submarine catches fire in international waters off Kinawa and at
least nine crewmen were killed and three injured.

The Navy drops charges against the remaining four sailors accused of lesbian
acts aboard the USS Norton Sound.
With the nomination of the Democratic convention and the endorsement of Sen.
Edward Kennedy, President Carter dramatically cuts into Ronald Reagan’s lead.
From a margin of 25%, the margin is down to 7% among likely voters.

Independent presidential candidate John B. Anderson says his campaign has
been obscured by “millions of dollars in free air time” the Republican and
Democratic conventions got, but that he will soon climb in the polls again.
Billy Carter defends his controversial dealings with
Libya and says he would never do anything to hurt
America because “I love my country.” At a Senate
hearing, he told of getting one-year’s use of a
Japanese-made Subaru truck in exchange for posing
in the truck for a company advertisement.
The stormy North Atlantic scuttles an expedition
aimed at finding the Titanic’s wreck. The mission was
called off, but its members hope to renew the effort
next year, musing a manned submarine.

Technology
- American Telephone and
Telegraph Co. says it plans a major
restructuring of its giant empire to comply
with the FCC’s order to separate customer
equipment business from regulated
telephone services. The company must form
a different subsidiary by March 1982.
Sports -
Philly first baseman Mike Schmidt is
on a roll. Over the past 10 games, Schmidt
has had 22 hits in 51 at bats for a .431
average.
The Detroit Tigers retire Al Kaline’s No. 6 during ceremonies.
Following their sixth loss, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner rips into the
Yankee team on the road. He was upset by Dick Howser’s decision to let Eric
Soderholm hit away after Bob Watson opened the ninth inning with a single. The
Yanks trailed the Orioles 6-5. “Here’s Soderholm hitting .147 and the lets him hit
away with a runner at first base. Bunt him over and then tie the game,” said
Steinbrenner.

Sources say
John Lennon
is recording again. He
has been behind closed doors at the “Hit Factory”
recording studios in New York. Lennon hasn’t
made an album of original material in six years.
Great new tune from the New Zealand band called
Split Enz- “I Got You”
8-Track tapes are in a huge downturn, with many
new tapes being returned to record companies.
Arista Records is only releasing the format with an
album that’s selling briskly.

City. Dates are Aug. 24 through 26.
Radio news - Ruth Meyer - director of
program development for the NBC Radio
Networks is promoted to vice president of
network radio programs.
Jimmy Fink, who was dropped by WPLJ, is
back on the station, but not full time.
Bobby Rich is out as program director of KHTZ-FM Los Angeles.
Don Imus of WNBC, Dan Ingram of WABC and Robert W. Morgan of KMPC will
speak at the National Association Broadcasters Convention about “Making
Money With Your Mouth.”
Top-40 KIMN Denver (AM950) did great in the recent ratings - a 7.7 share, up
from a 6.8 in the fall.
Television news -
A spokesman for General Foods, a major sponsor “Three’s Company” and
“Dallas,” says it will continue to choose its programming independently of a
threatened church-sponsored boycott of its products. Efforts to organize
consumer boycotts of advertisers who sponsor programming they find morally
objectionable have become an increasingly popular tactic among some
conservative religious groups.
Close captioning - Six months after its beginning, some 24,000 have purchased
$250 decoders and only PBS has expanded such programming for those who
cannot hear. CBS still has no closed captioned programming. ABC, PBS and
NBC broadcast their first such programming, although limited,
in March.
Joe Namath
hosts “All American Pie,” an hour-long variety
special this Sunday on ABC-TV.
Pirate decoder makers - The FCC warns manufacturers and
sellers of TV signal decoders that they are violating federal law
unless their devices are authorized by the FCC.
