A top aide to President Bush says that the President would not support federal
funding to increase the number of embryonic stem cell lines available for study
even if scientists concluded that the existing supply was insufficient for research.
President Bush announces that he would allow the federal government to fund
medical research that uses stem cells taken form a limited number of human
embryos. He said the government would only pay for experiments using stem
cells that already have been drawn from embryos and that it would not fund
research that caused any additional embryos to be destroyed.
The Bush Administration says it is moving to expand oil and gas drilling on
millions of acres of Western lands, opening up some of the nation’s last
unspoiled mountains, canyons and badlands.
