Congressional leaders line-up solidly behind President bush’s decision to deploy
forces in Saudi Arabia and that the threat of Iraqi control of world oil supplies
justifies putting U.s. troops at risk. President Bush ordered a massive deployment
of American troops and warplanes to Saudi Arabia and other Mideast locations.
Christian Brando , - son of Marlon Brando
- pleads not guilty to murder and illegal
weapons charges and is back in jail after
failing to post $10 million in bail.
Iraq sends word that most Americans in
Iraq and Kuwait cannot leave and may be
held indefinitely - and there about 580 of
them in Iraq.
Hussein’s holy war against the U.S. - Arab
leaders abandon hope of negotiating a
peaceful solution to the Persian Gulf crisis
and now call for the dispatch of Arab troops
in the area.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak
declares there is no hope for the crisis in
Kuwait and dispatches several thousand
troops to Saudi Arabia to serve alongside a multinational force.
Iraq is prevented from loading oil at its pipeline terminal on the red sea coast of
Saudi Arabia. There’s an international warship fleet assembled nearby to
intercept Iraqi shipments. Earlier, the U.S. said it planned to intercept ships and
half Iraqi sea trade in response to a request from the exiled government of
Kuwait.
Rioting spread from the South African city of Port Elizabeth to neighboring
Uitenhage and South African police say 42 have been shot dead.
A jury convicts Mayor Marion Barry of only one of 14 drug-related charges -
misdemeanor drug possession.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf wins her 50 th career singles title at the San Diego tennis
& Racquet Club, defeating fourth-seeded Manuela Maleeva.

Pete Rose enters a minimum- security camp in Illinois. Rose, banned from
baseball a year ago for gambling, was convicted on two counts of filing false
income tax returns, where he’ll remain for five months.
Quarterback Joe Montana gets one of the richest contracts in NFL history (so far)
- agreeing to a four-year deal worth $13 million with the San Francisco 49ers.

Concert tour - McDonald’s presents New Kids on the Block Magic Summer tour.
MTV won’t play the latest Billy Idol video - “L.A. Woman” because of alleged
referenced to bondage.
Entertainment news - Marlon Brando finally speaks out about his son Christian,
whose bail in his murder case has been reduced to $2 million. “My son is no
mad-dog killer.” “There is another view. There is another Christian. And I hope to
have the opportunity to present it in court.”
