A federal judge in Washington orders John W. Hinckley Jr. indefinitely committed
to a mental hospital, acting on doctors reports that Hinckley remains “an
unpredictably dangerous person” obsessed with actress Jodie Foster.
President Reagan tells Prime Minister Menachem Begin that his country’s
shelling of West Beirut has stymied U.S. efforts to get PLO guerrillas out of
Lebanon and the action had brought “more needless destruction and bloodshed.”
The Federal Reserve Board reduces its basic lending rate to banks to 105% from
11%. Several major banks then cut back their prime lending rates from 15% to
14.5%.
Not for tax bill - President Reagan fails to sway rep. Jack Kemp (R-NY) leader of
the conservative forces opposing his $98.9-billion tax boost. The President said
the tax increase would have little negative effect on the average American.
Sally Ride
, the first American woman scheduled
to go into space, says she is married to fellow
astronaut Steve Hawley. Married July 24, she
said, “we don’t want to make a big deal of it. We
only told a few friends.”

., a decorated veteran of
the Korean and Vietnam wars to four-
star general - the first black four-star
general.
The Census Bureau reports that one of every five children in America
in 1981 lived in a single-parent family - a 54% increase since 1970.
Hot Streak - Rick Springfield, who portrays Dr.
Noah Drake on “General Hospital” and his
“Working Class Dog” album is a best seller with
over 2 million sales.

- 14 year NFL vet Greg Landry is signed by the Chicago Blitz of the
United States Football League. He was recently released by the Baltimore Colts.
The Oakland Coliseum, which lost the Raiders to Los Angeles, will host the
USFL’s team there - The Invaders.
Merlin Olson
, Doug Atkins, Sam Huff, and George Musso
enter the Football Hall of Fame at Canton. Olson is now a
well-known TV actor who portrays “Father Murphy”
Granny Goose potato chip company is including baseball
cards with their chips and collectors are hoarding them.
The small company is out of Northern California and only
distributes in that area.
Television news -
CBS Cable says its advertising revenues are expected to reach less than one-
half the $20 million anticipated. Total spending for advertising on cable television
this year is expected to be $250 million.
Ted Turner
overprotecting his turf - The story is - On June 21,
a cable system in Independence California cancelled to carry
Turner’s CNN and instead, replaced with new rival SNC
(Satellite News Channel). Three weeks later, Turner responded
with an advertisement in the local paper telling subscribers to “let
your cable operator know how you feel and contact your cit
council or mayor to.” It could end up in court, as Turner is known
to be litigious. About the switch. SNC could have good timing as
Turner’s original three-year contracts with local cable systems across the country
begin expiring next June. But, Turner could tie those up in court. He’s also said
he wants the Justice department to look at SNC for possible anti-trust violations.
Visidep - a new 3-D picture process which requires no glasses, has been
developed by three University of South Carolina professors. The new process will
give viewers a more accurate look at player positions in sporting events and will
enhance any kind of viewing including ads. The inventors are Porter McLaurin,
Edwin Jones and LeConte Cathey.
