The White discloses that the
Nautilus
, the world’s first
nuclear-powered submarine
has crossed the top of the
world, traveling below the artic
icecap. The sub cruised artic
some 400 ft below the surface.
The feat was disclosed at a
White House ceremony where
President Eisenhower awarded
the ship’s commander, Comdr. William Anderson, the nation’s highest peacetime
decoration.
Appearing at what (the Soviets) say is the biggest hydroelectric plant in
Kuibyshev, Soviet Premier Khrushchev warns that the Soviet Union and “all the
other peace-loving nations” would destroy Britain and the United States if they
unleashed “a new aggressive war.” “We will do everything in our power to
prevent them from unleashing a new war... no one can defeat the combined
might of the Communist camp.”
The U.S. court of appeals overturns the
conviction and orders a judgment of acquittal
for playwright
Arthur Miller
, husband of
Marilyn Monroe
. The case grew out of
Miller’s refused to tell the House Committee
on Un-American Activities in 1956, the
names of Communist writers with whom he
acknowledged attending meetings in 1947.
Marilyn Monroe celebrated with a
champagne breakfast and a long telephone
call to her mate.
In divorce court, Mrs Phyllis Fitzgerald, wife of Roy Fitzgerald (aka Rock Hudson)
says that he seldom took her out socially because he didn’t like to wear ties or
dress up. Continuing, she said “he wouldn’t talk to me for days, sometimes
weeks. Once when I asked him why he wouldn’t talk to me, he struck me.” Under
the terms, she will receive $250 a week for 10 years plus the family home. The
couple had been married since November of 1955 - they have no children.

Herbert Hoover
celebrates his 84th birthday. The former
president says he still works 10 to 12 hours a day, 7 days a
week. Asked what he does, Hoover asked his staff and they
compiled the following tasks over the last year: wrote 55,952
letters (not including birthdays, Christmas or speech
acknowledgements), he made nine major speeches, 21 minor
ones out of 1620 invitations, published a book “The Ordeal Of
President Wilson,”and participated in dedications of the Truman
library, seven boys clubs and a public school named for him.
Bing Crosby and wife Kathy Grant
announce the
birth of a son. It’s his fifth and her first - named Bing
Jr.
