Congress passes the omnibus trade bill. It’s a measure that will strengthen the
government’s ability to retaliate against unfair trading practices aboard and
establish a new program of unemployment relief and job training for workers
thrown out of their jobs by import competition.
The Kingdom of Jordon says it will cut off al funds and relinquish all responsibility
for government services on the West Bank - a blow to almost a million Arab
inhabitants there
Reported AIDS cases throughout the world rose by 7.766 or 7.7% in July,
according to the World Health Organization.
A blaze breaks out in a Berkeley design furniture
warehouse, next store to one storing part of Reggie
Jackson’s extensive classic car collection. Damage was
estimated at $88,000 to the buildings and $3.2 million to the
cars and other property. All his cars were destroyed.
The trial of ex-White House aide Oliver North is postponed
until after the presidential election to give lawyers more
time to study hundreds of thousands of top-secret documents.
The House gives final congressional approval to legislation expressing a national
apology and authorizing tax-free payments of $20,000 each to individuals who
suffered wartime imprisonment.
President Reason names Wall Street investment banker Nicholas Brady to
replace treasury Secretary James A. Baker III, who is resigning to assume the
reins of Vice President George Bush’s presidential campaign.
Democratic vice presidential nominee Lloyd Bensten
calls for a new aid package for the Nicaraguan rebels that
includes standby military supplies, highlighting once again
his differences over the issue with his running mate,
Michael Dukakis.
A federal judge rules that the city of Yonkers NY was in
contempt of court for resisting housing desegregation. The
judge imposed a 4100 fine on Yonkers and decreed that it
will double daily, which means the penalty easily would
wipe out the city’s $47 million operating budget after 22 days.

One soldier is killed and nine injured when an IRA bomb flattened a British army
barracks in North London.
Carl Rowan , liberal columnist pleas not guilty to charges of
possessing an unregistered gun and ammunition stemming
from when he shot a young man who was among a group of
people having a pool party behind his home, in his pool -
uninvited.
Business -
New York Developer Donald Trump announces that he owns .4% of Pillsbury
Co., but analysts say problems in the company’s Burger King unit make it an
unattractive takeover target.
Sports - the NFL suspends six players who tested positive for drugs in their
routine camp physicals. Suspended were Robb Ridick - Buffalos Bills; Doug
duBose - San Francisco 49ers; Greg Townsend - Oakland Raiders; Kevin
Gogan - Dallas Cowboys; Rick Reed - Denver Broncos; Pat Saindon - Atlanta
Falcons.
Keith Hernandez , after missing 52 games comes back with
a bang, hitting a two-run homer with the Mets beating the
Pirates 3-2.
For the first time at Wrigley Field, there is a night game
under the lights.
Raider QB Jim Plunkett , who almost
retired, says he’ll play this year and
see what happens.
Bruce David Imball, an Olympic silver medallist in diving
four years ago, is charged with two counts of vehicular
homicide after police say he ran his automobile into a crowd
of 30 to 40 people on a dead-end road in Brandon, FL.

director of other successful movies as “Silver Streak,” “Foul Play,” “9 to 5,” and
“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” He was 47… of AIDS.
Music news -
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince release
“Nightmare On My Street,’ a parody of “Nightmare on
Elm Street” featuring a voice that sounds like Freddy
Krueger. Rival rappers “The Fat Boys” also are on it with
“Are You Ready for Freddy.”
But wait - New Line Cinema, producers of “Freddy” on films, recently filed a
complaint against both Jive and RCA Records against Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh
Prince’s records. The record company says there is no harm; it’s a parody, not a
rip-off. We didn’t use Freddy’s voice. We ran the Fresh Prince’s voice through a
processor,” said a spokesman.
Cher, Rod Stewart, Guns N’ Roses, INXS, Jody Whatley and the Fat Boys are
scheduled to perform on MTV’s 1988 Music Video Awards show set for Sept. 7.
Arseno Hall will host.
Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Sammy Davis Jr. will kick off an 11-city, 21-date
tour on Sept 17. Ms. Minnelli replaced Den Martin when he fell ill a few months
ago in the middle of the Rat Pack Reunion Tour.
Hand-holding - there’s a strong rumor that Bruce
Springsteen and his backup singer Patti Scialfa are
an item. They were seen holding hands at a concert in
Barcelona, Spain - the final concert of Springsteen’s
five-month “tunnel of Love” tour.
Television news -
Bryan Gumbel sings a 3-year contract with NBC that
will keep him on the morning “Today” show.
“The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd,” canceled last spring after a two-seasons
run on NBC, will be given new life on Lifetime.

Oprah Winfrey signs a five-year commitment deal, according to syndicator King-
World. The program is seen on 198 TV stations including all the ABC-TV owned
and operated stations.
Passing - Joe Carcione , best kown for his
nationally syndicated “Green Grocer” food
minutes on television. Carcione (73) was with
his family when he died of cardiac arrest after
a lengthy battle with intestinal cancer. He was
syndicated to about 80 TV stations.
Actor Trinidad Silva Jr., who appeared as a
gang leader in the movie “Colors” and TV’s
“Hill Street Blues”, is killed in a three-vehicle
crash in S. California.
