President Reagan calls for mandatory drug testing for
federal workers in sensitive jobs and says his cabinet
will be the first in line. “If this battle is to be won and it
must, each and every one of us must take a stand and
get involved... Victory in this case is a drug-free
generation.”
Overriding objections from the State Department and
the Pentagon, President Reagan authorizes
subsidized sales of American grain to the Soviet
Union. The decision should assist American farmers
by boosting exports.
The Soviet Union grants asylum to former CIA agent
Edward Howard. Howard disappeared from his home
in Santa Fe, NM, in September, days before the FBI charged him with selling
secrets to the Soviets. It’s the first defection by a CIA agent since the ‘60’s.
Off the east end of Long Island, Frank Mundus and Donald Braddock bring in a
great white shark, weighing almost 3,500 pounds - a record. Mundus’ past fishing
exploits inspired “Jaws” by Peter Benchley.
Japan and the U.S. settle a dispute - agreeing to a plan to prevent dumping by
Japanese manufacturers and to give U.S. chipmakers better access to the
Japanese market. The five-year agreement was reached after almost a year of
negotiations.
Bill Schroeder - the longest living artificial heart recipient, passes away.
Schroeder survived 20 months with the plastic and metal mechanical pump.
Passing - Famed disc jockey
William B. Williams
(62). Best known for his 41 year of longevity on New
York’s WNEW (1130) and for his friendship with
Frank Sinatra. Williams began at WNEW when
Sinatra was doing a twice-weekly “singing show,”
dubbing him “chairman of the broads” because of his
popularity with woman. As time passed, that became
“chairman of the board,” a handle that stuck through
Sinatra’s incredible career.

Passing - Jazz pianist Teddy Wilson (73).
Passing away last week - it’s learned that Vicente
Minnelli will leave the bulk of his estate to daughter
Liza. Liza will get $130 thousand in personal property
plus his Beverly Hills home - worth about $1 million. He
left his current wife $100 thousand and $5000 to his
other daughter. He did request that his wife remain in
the house.
In sports - The U.S. Football league announces that it
is suspending play while it seeks a network television contract, plus an increase
in the three-dollar award in its anti-trust suit against the
NFL.
Willie McCovey
is inducted into the baseball hall of
fame at Cooperstown, NY.
Disney says “Sleeping Beauty” will finally be released
on videocassette. It will go on sale in September for the
unusual low price of $17.95. It’s the sixth animated
feature released on home video
from Disney. “Alice In
Wonderland,” “Dumbo,”
“Pinocchio,” “Robin Hood,” and
“The Sword In The Stone” were
released at a $79.95 price.(Note - original release price
was $29.95).
Robert Tisch (60) - President of Loews Corp, is selected as
the postmaster general. Said the postal board: “Bob Tisch
is a careful, highly skilled manager and corporate leader
who can strengthen the postal service.”
Maria Shriver and Forrest Sawyer sign-off on the CBS
morning news. The pair was fired for low ratings.
Fox Broadcasting Co says that 79 stations have agreed to broadcast all of their
programming beginning in October with “The Joan Rivers Show.” The 79 stations
will effectively reach 80% of the U.S. population. By March, the network intends
to begin broadcasting five hours of prime time programming spread over
