President Reagan challenges Walter Mondale to spell out how he would increase
taxes. Reagan says he vows to veto any measure that would raise personal
income tax rates.
President Reagan, applauding Poland’s recent amnesty for political prisoners,
drops two of the lesser sanctions imposed after Warsaw’s 1981 crackdown on
the Solidarity union movement but will continue for now to oppose Poland’s
membership in the International Monetary Fund.

fabricated Ku Klux Klan threats sent to Asian and African
countries planning to participate in the Olympic Games.
Jesse Jackson announces that he will not run for the south
Carolina Senate seat held by Republican Strom Thurmond,
but instead will campaign around the country for democrats
this fall.
Carl Lewis wins his first two 200-meter heats. He’ll try for his second Olympic
gold medal.
Dissident Andrei Sakharov ends his hunger strike, but remains hospitalized.
