Israel accepts an American proposal that it, Egypt and Jordan begin talking about
a Middle East peace settlement. The proposal calls for a three-month cease fire.
Egypt and Jordan have already accepted.
President Nixon says that Charles Manson is “guilty, directly or indirectly of eight
murders without reason.” Because of the remark, Manson’s attorney, Irving
Kanarek moved for a mistrial. The motion was made out of the jury’s hearing and
it is still believed that they are unaware of the comment.
General Motors unveils its
newest car - “The Vega” in
Detroit. John Delorean (45),
Chevrolet’s general manager
said, “it’s the American system
that’s being tested.” The Vega
is GM’s answer to combat the
ever-increasing popularity of
smaller cars imported from
Japan. Delorean predicts that
the Vega will lead in small car
sales by next year.
Cousins Robert Kennedy Jr. (16) and R. Sargent Shriver III (17) are arrested in
connection with a marijuana offense. Sources said the charges were juvenile
delinquency by reason of being present where narcotics were kept, illegal
possession of marijuana and conspiracy.
East Germany banishes the
maxi-skirt
as
workaday wear because ankle-length skirts do not fit
the “active style of living” of Communist woman.
East German fall and winter wear this year will
feature skirt lengths above or just covering the
knees.
Disneyland closes six-hours early when 300
longhaired youths gathered at the park to celebrate
Yippi day. Fistfights broke out and for the first time in
the park’s history, riot police were called. The
youths, who showed up mid-day, ran-up a Viet-Cong
Flag at the Fort of Tom Sawyer Island and made
regular tourists jittery. 18 were arrested and officials

gave refunds or rain checks to the regular crowd of about 30,000.
In New York City, a car traveling 60 mph plus, slams into a five-story tenement,
knocks out a building support and sends parts of the apartments and their
occupants crashing to the street. The automobile hit a support that caused the
second floor to collapse, and then the third, fourth and fifth floors gave away. The
driver of the car was killed and 9 others were injured.
Marries - Cynthia Powell Lennon (30) to
Roberto Bassanini
(27). The former wife of
John Lennon; son
Julian
(8) was a page at
the 10 minute ceremony. Among the
wedding guests was British model Twiggy.
None of the Beatles were there.
A judge in California rules that Isaac Jones,
former UCLA star, is indeed the surviving
husband of actress Inger Stevens and heir to her $171
thousand estate. Jones, a Negro, testified that he and Stevens agreed to keep
the marriage a secret because she feared that the racial difference would
jeopardize her career. Miss Stevens was a regular on television in the late 50’s
through the 60’s, including a starring role in “The Farmer’s Daughter” with William
Windom. Inger Stevens (35) died on April 30 from an overdose of barbiturates.
