An American atomic weapon mounted in a missile is detonated above the Pacific
Ocean - the first step toward creation of a defense against intercontinental
ballistic missiles.

George Meany
calls on “honest and decent”
elements in the teamsters Union to rebel against Union
Chief James R. Hoffa and throw him out of office. At the
same time, Meany condemned any alliances between
AFL-CIO member organizations and the Teamsters.
The United States now recognizes the Republic of Iraq,
an act accompanied by expressions of goodwill from
both sides and the release of two arrested U.S.
marines.
The House approves a bill to raise the Social Security checks of 11,800
beneficiaries by 7%.
Soviet Premier Khrushchev and Mao Tse-Rung of Red China announce they
have agreed to a secret four-day meeting in Peiping to demand an immediate big
power summit meeting on the Middle East.
Jordan authorities tell the United Arab Republic has sealed off its Syrian border
with Jordan, apparently on Russian insistence. Jordan quickly retaliates by
sealing off their side of the frontier.
President Eisenhower accepts Soviet Premier Khrushchev’s surprise tactical
switch to throw the Middle East dispute into the United Nations General
Assembly. This after Khrushchev refused to meet President Eisenhower face to
face in a Security Council discussion of the Middle East crisis.

$17,5000 pay-off to avoid a citywide strike of the teamsters
Union in 1949.
Teamster President James Hoffa tells Senate investigators
at a stormy hearing that “fortunate” horse race bets were
the source of $60, 322 in extra income he received from
1948 to 1956.

result of an auto accident in January, will conduct a daily
radio program called “Campy’s Corner” over station WINS,
New York The five-minute program will be tape-recorded in
the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the
New York University-Bellevue Medical Center, where
Campenella is recuperating. He has an impressive line-up of
guests for the first broadcast - Jackie Robinson, Pee We
Reese, Yogi Berra, Mel Allen and Ford Frick. Each Friday,
he’ll feature a mailbag feature where he’ll answer listener questions. Assisting
him will be sports announcer Chris Schenkel and sponsored by P. Ballantine and
Sons and the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. It starts Monday at 6:00p.
