In Havana - some 500,000 Cubans cheer the arrival of Soviet
Leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
In Cuba - Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev calls for an
end to “military supplies to Latin America from any part of the
world,” and proclaims a “real possibility of guaranteeing peace in
Central America.”
Soviet President Mikhail S Gorbachev arrives in London from Cuba for a 40-hour
visit that will mix hard talk on human rights with traditional British pageantry.
The Supreme Court rules that agents may stop and question airline passengers
who look and act like drug couriers. If agents have a “reasonable suspicion” that
a traveler is carrying drugs, they may question them and search their bags
without violating his privacy rights.
A federal judge refuses to order former President Ronald Reagan to testify at
Oliver North’s trial saying, “nothing… remotely sports” the defense claim that the
ex-President authorized illegal activities.
The independent trade union Solidarity comes in from seven years in the political
cold joining a historic agreement with Poland’s Communist government that
paves the way for the first free elections in Poland since World War II.
An investment group headed by former Baseball
Commissioner Peter Ueberroth says it would buy strikebound
and bankrupt Eastern Airlines in a deal valued at $463.9
million.
Sports - The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper reports that a man listed in court
documents by a code name and identified by sources as Cincinnati Reds
Manager Pete Rose, wagered $8,000 to $16,000 daily on games during the 1987
season.
Free agency works - The National Football League’s management council
reports that 229 of 619 unconditional free agents changed teams and declared
the system a success.

Music news -
The Who is planning a reunion tour this summer, with a stop at Radio City Music
Hall in New York.
MTV and black artists update - MTV rejects a video
of the rap song “Straight Outa Compton” by Los
Angeles based rap group N.W.A. claiming the song
“glorifies violence.” But a new video by N.W.A. member
Eric Wright has been cleared by the channel as
acceptable.
Black artists making inroads on MTV - Ever since Rick
James spoke up about the lack of black videos aired on
MTV - the channel has been under some scrutiny, but
always insisted that it played to its audience. Not
traditional R&B acts have found success on MTV such
as Tracy Chapman and Living Colour - both have
prospered via the channel, and rap, the only true youth
music of this decade had found a home on MTV. Run-
D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys opened the door, then along came D.J. Jazzy Jeff
& The Fresh Prince and Tone Loc. With the introduction late last year of the
Saturday morning “Yo! MTV Raps” - hosted by hip-hop personality Fab Five
Freddie was a ratings winner. Quick to capitalize on a good thing, MTV now
programs a daily half -hour of “Yo! MTV Raps” in the afternoons, co-hosted by
dr. Dre, leader of the Def Jam act Original Concept.
More Rap - “The Adventures of
Slick Rock.” On Def Jam has
caused controversy on the street.
Though meant as a warning, the
album’s cautionary sticker,
“Several tracks include explicit
lyrics, parental advisory,” has
actually vaulted the album from
stores.
Pepsi says its much-ballyhooed
ad Madonna made for them will
not be shown again because it is
tied in the public’s mind to the
controversial “Like a Prayer” video. It only aired once - March 2.

“Gilley’s” in Pasadena Texas, made famous in the movie “Urban Cowboy” is
closing its doors for good. It all has to do with a partner’s lawsuit which includes
Mickey Gilley
While in Ft. Worth, head to Bill Bob’sTexas - billed as the World’s largest honky
tonk. It just re-opened after the Texas oil bust.
Television news -
On the syndicated Morton Downey Jr. Show - Hunters meet their critics.
More Morton Downey Jr. - The show is seen by an estimated 28 million
viewers daily. He has a new record album out - “Morton Downey Jr.
Sings.” He’s known as a loudmouth who uses bullying tactics.
More Downey - Morton Downey Jr. reportedly struck a soundman in the
head with a microphone when a television crew from the show “Inside
edition” confronted him for a surprise interview outside his New York office.
Said one observer - “Downey went absolutely berserk, He began
screaming, cursing, grabbed the boom kike and swing it into the
soundman’s head.”
