rejects any
compromise over the 50 hostages held at the U.S.
Embassy as “diabolic trickery” and said only Iran’s
new parliament can decide the issue, dooming a
proposal to move the Americans into government
custody.
The Amtrak Silver Star train collides head-on with
a freight train near Lakeview, NC. 70 aboard are
injured.
Iran’s ruling Revolutionary Council delays a
decision on taking custody of the American
hostages until President Carter clarifies his
response to Iranian demands.
President Carter and Ronald Reagan pad their leads - as both win in the
Louisiana primary election.
The Senate Budget Committee votes to slash government operating expenses
by $2.5 billion across the board, including a $600-millin cut in the Defense
department budget.
Las Vegas - Tearful nurse Jani Adams is arrested on charges of killing a patient
by tampering with life support equipment, the result of a grand jury’s investigation
into reports a “death’s angel’ was on the loose in Nevada’s largest private
hospital.
The nation’s largest bus and subway system comes to a
dead stop in its first strike in 14 years, forcing millions of
New York commuters to scramble to work the best way they
could. “The unthinkable has happened and now we have to
figure out how to live with the unthinkable and we will,” said
Mayor Edward Koch
. “Life will go on and we will do
whatever has to be done.”
Pope John Paul II celebrates Easter Sunday Mass before
350,000 people in St. Peter’s Square and calls on the world
to reject war and terrorism and accept Jesus.
President Carter breaks diplomatic relations with the government of Iran because
of the “illegal and outrageous holding of 50 U.S. hostages in Tehran.”

President Leonid I. Brezhnev accepts a Lenin Prize for literature. The prize was
awarded for three volumes of Brezhnev’s memoirs, titled “Little land,” Rebirth”
and “Virgin Land,” all published in 1978.
Sports -
Dr. J. leads the Philadelphia 76ers to a 112-104 victory over the
Washington Bullets - and the Bullets are out of post-season play. Dr J. scored 31
points.
Passing -
Jesse Owens
- the greatest Olympic
athlete of all. He was 66.
Larry Holmes TKO’s Leroy Jones at 2:56 of the eighth
round to make it six defenses, six knockouts.
Entertainment news -
The U.S. forest Service says actor-environmentalist
Robert Redford and some of his friends were caught by
rangers illegally using a helicopter to ski in a restricted
scenic area.
Television news -
Chuck Barris Productions has halted new production if its six series and has laid
off most of its staff. Chuck Barris says he decided to pull out until the market
improved for syndicated shows. He’s not out of the picture entirely - in fact - he’s
in the picture - “The Gong Show Movie” - a $3 million gamble is about to come
out.
After 12 seasons - Hawaii Five-O ends. In the
conclusion broadcast this week over CBS-TV,

into the open so that he can catch his
antagonist.
In February - Television viewing in the average
household hits a record 7-hours and 22-minutes
per day. According to the Television bureau of
Advertising reports, among the factors that may
have contributed to February’s high viewing
levels were the Winter Olympics, the ongoing
crises in Iran and Afghanistan and spiraling inflation and gas.
