Russia unfolds a disarmament plan to freeze arms, reduce armies, ban atomic
tests at once and forbid the storing of atomic weapons in Germany. The U.S. is
said to be cool of the proposal.
A fire-weakened wall in a Bronx factory collapses killing six New York fireman.
Fighting breaks out along the Gaza Strip as Egyptian and Israeli forces battle for
10 hours.
Russia conducts another nuclear test in recent days as part of its accelerating
atomic weapons program. It’s the second such test in 12 days.
A stealthy assailant, without a word of warning, hurls sulfuric acid into the eyes of
newspaper labor columnist Victor Riesel in New York. He could be blinded.

Hi Tech - The British say they have perfected a flat
television tube that can be hung on the wall like a picture
and used either for black and white or color transmission
“with almost no internal complications.” Invented by Dr.
Dennis Gabor, the pilot model is 20 inches square and
slightly less than four inches in depth. The “gun” that produces the electron
stream is in the middle of the top edge of the square tube. It projects the
electrons downward to the bottom edge, where the stream is bent through an
angle of 180 deg.

- Samuel Goldwyn Productions seeks an injunction
against CBS, to prevent them from a special based on the life of baseball great
Lou Gehrig. The company contends that under an agreement signed in July of
1951, the ballplayer’s widow, Mrs. Eleanor Gehrig, assigned all rights to her
husband’s life story for the filming of the movie, “The Pride of the Yankees,”
released the following year.

More color broadcasts - NBC says it will
expand its color programming next TV season
and is the only network with plans for stepping
up such programming. CBS, which presents a
few color shows is maintaining its policy of
“watchful waiting.” ABC, which offers no color
programs has said it might launch some dolor
shows in the fall of 1957 if the audience is large
enough at the time. Both NBC and CBs are
affiliated with manufacturers of color sets. ABC
is not.
