Jerusalem - Retired U.S. auto worker John Demjanjuk is sentenced to death by
hanging for killing thousands of Jews at the World War II nazi concentration
camp in occupied Poland, where he became known as “Ivan the Terrible.”
Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III says that he would “like to
see the day” when every person arrested is subjected
to a urine test.
Shift of policy - The White House says the aim of U.S.
policy in Panama is to oust Brig. Gen. Manual A.
Noriega from power but not necessarily drive him from
the country.
Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev meets the leader of
the Russian Orthodox Church and says the Soviet
state has made tragic mistakes in its past treatment of
Christmas. He also said believers “have the full right to
express their conviction with dignity” and pledged the state would not interfere,
according to Tass.
The government’s chief forecasting gauge of future economic activity shot up
.8% in March, pointing to continued growth for the rest of the year according to
the Commerce Department.
The federal government orders inspection of old Boeing 737’s for cracks in the
upper fuselage. This after a structural failure in the fuselage of an Aloha Airlines
737 after its roof was ripped open. 60 people were injured and a stewardess was
sucked out of the cabin to her death.
The U.S. economy grew at a respectable 2.3% annual rate in the first three
months of 1988.
General Motors is dropping Firestone Tire as a supplier of tires for new GM cars
and trucks, which account for about 20% of Firestone’s U.S. production. GM
says it was part of their ongoing supplier-rationalization study.” GM says they’ve
got four other tire suppliers - Genera, Goodyear, Michelin and Uniroyal-
Goodrich. Separately, Firestone shareholders will vote on a $2.6 billion buyout
offer from Bridgestone. Corp of Japan.

Comcast and Tele-Communications agree to acquire the cable systems of the
former Storer Communications for about $1.55 billion.
Michael Milken - king of “junk” bonds refuses to
answer questions from a congressional subcommittee
investigating a $145-million fund that allegedly invested
in bond issues before they were distributed to the
public.
Sports - Manager Frank Robinson is taking blame for
the Baltimore Orioles incredible losing streak - where
they have lost a record of 20 consecutive games.
Music news - A Los Angeles Superior Court judge
removes Janie Williams as trustee of her 16-year-old
daughter’s $100,000 trust fund. The daughter is teen
singing sensation Tiffany.
A federal jury in White Plains, NY rules that Mick Jagger did not steal his 1985 hit
“Just Another Night” from Patrick Alley, a Jamaican-born musician from the
Bronx.
The number of pre-recorded music on records, tapes and the new CD format
jumped by more than 14% in 1987. Total number of units sold last year - 706.8
million up from 618.3 million in 1986.
The 1987 performance is the industry’s best since peaking in 1978 at 762.1 total
units. Last year’s dollar volume was the industry’s highest ever - $5.57 billion,
compared to $4.65 billion in 1986. For the first time, the dollar volume of compact
disc sales in 1987 exceeded those of record albums. CD’s did $1.60 billion last
year compared to $930 million for LP’s.

This year’s fastest growing cable
channel? The Discovery Channel and
its dose of nature programs. Said one
executive - “If it can eat you, the
ratings go through the roof.”
CBS blames the delay on the writer’s
strike for its decision to delay the start
of the fall season.
