Trouble In Jordan - Premier Hussein Khalidi’s
government resigns, but the King defies anti-West
demonstrators, which caused the resignations of his
Cabinet. Later, King Hussein places Jordan under a
military governor and launches a determined war
against the Communists in his kingdom. Hussein then
imposes military law on Jordan in a series of dramatic
moves against his enemies inside and outside the
country. As a warning/deterrent to the Reds, the U.S.
sends 36 warships to the area. The U.S. declares that
the independence and integrity of Jordan are being
threatened by “international Communism” - one of the key conditions of the
Mideast resolution under which President Eisenhower may extend aid.
Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy is reported as seriously ill at Bethesda Naval Hospital
with acute hepatitis. His condition is considered serious.
The U.S. offers $10 million in economic aid to King Hussein’s new anti-
Communist government. Jordan indicated immediate acceptance.
President Eisenhower brands labor racketeering “an abomination which must be
eliminated” and calls for ousting union leaders “who abuse power and trust.”
At Chicago Stadium - Sugar Ray Robinson
turned-in one of the great upsets of the ring,
knocking out Gene Fullmer in the faith round to win
the world’s middle-weight title for the fourth time.
The Senate Armed services Committee plans a
public hearing on Air Force efforts to promote
movie star Jimmy Stewart and 10 other Air Force
Reserve officers. Listed as James Maitland Stewart
by the Air Force, he’s up for General.

Good to last drop? A new bean, which may replace
coffee as a popular beverage, is discovered in the jungles
along the Madelena River in Columbia according to
Bogota newspapers. The bean has been christened
chimbombo by the natives. Natives were attracted by the
aromatic fragrance of the jungle plant, not unlike that of
the coffee bean. Several of them picked some of the
beans, toasted and ground them. Brewing the drink, they
reported it superior in both aroma and taste. Stores are
now selling it at the equivalent of 3 cents a pound. Plans
are under way for large-scale plantations of chimbombo
trees as soon as the laboratory tests produce favorable
reports. Exports will follow.

half-hour before rival NBC broadcasts “The Perry Como Show.”

the title role. Other cast members will include Barbara hale, ray
Collins, William Talman and William Hopper. The series was
originally scheduled to go head to head with Perry Como at 8pm.

week, beginning in Detroit with a six-month tour of 62 cities and 78 appearances
to follow. Also on hand for most of the tour will be side-kick Tonto and the horse
Silver.
Now that “I Love Lucy” will not be returning to
Monday nights, what will replace it? CBS-TV is
looking at “ Dick and the Duchess ” for the all
important slot. The program has been submitted
to Lucy sponsor General Foods and Proctor and
Gamble for consideration. “Dick and the
Duchess” is a situation comedy about a young
American and his English bride in London. It was
shot in London and features two unknowns
( Patrick O’Neal and Hazel Court ).
More Lucy - CBS-TV buys ownership of “I Love
Lucy” from Desilu Productions for an estimated
$5 million. The package includes 178 half-hour
episodes already produced and ownership of
whatever films which may be produced in the
future. Although “I Love Lucy” will no longer be produced, plans call for several
hour spectaculars featuring the cast next season.
Music news - Hot music trend these days - Calypso
- lead by Harry Belefonte. Some say it’s giving
rock n roll a run of it. His latest album is “An
Evening With Belafonte” on RCA records. Two male
trios - the Tarriers and the Easy Riders, have
successfully adopted the Belafonte formula of
building a widely varied folk song repertory. Record
stores are filled with Calypso music. The hottest
artist of course is Elvis Presley. He seems to be
everywhere. A movie magazine asks its readers -
“What do you think of Elvis Presley? Is he just
another wiggly guitar-thumper who will soon give way to more conventional Pat
Boone? Is he a second Adonis the Valentino of the bop generation? Is he an
obscene adult who leads youngsters into mass hysteria and sin? Or, as Sen.
Kefauver of Tennessee put it - is he “just a nice young boy from Tennessee?”

Week of April 25, 1957
Buddy Knox , who has a big hit with “Party Doll” is
called to active duty as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Not to worry, producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi
Creatore cut more than 20 sides with Knox “to insure
Buddy’s recording career while he is on active duty.”
The sides will be issued as singles and in albums
during Knox’s term of service, presently estimated at six
months.
Ray Price and Marty Robbins, hot Columbia Records
country artists just finished an eight-day promotional
tour. Robbins was plugging “White Sport Coat” and
Price “Please Don’t Leave Me.”
DJ Alan Freed of WINS, New York (1010 on your
dial) is getting busier. He has just set up a new BMI
publishing company - “Figure Music” which will be
headed by Jack Hooke. He’ll also emcee his own half-
hour TV show over ABC-TV May 4 and 11; following
which he will ready a stage show at the New York
Paramount Theater starting July 3. He set for a similar
show at the Brooklyn Paramount in September.
There’s talk of him taking a rock show over to Europe.
Freed will tape his WINS radio show since his first
ABC-TV program is set for 7:30 - 8:00pm. The first
ABC-TV show will feature Guy Mitchell, June Valli,
Martha Carson, Del Vikings, the Clovers and
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. If the ratings hold-up, the network will present him on a
regular basis.
Good news for network radio. Ford Motor Co says it is going to spend a hefty $3
million beginning in the fall on network radio advertising. It’s the largest one-lump
sum by one company in many years. Network radio has been losing money since
1953.
