Britain breaks diplomatic relations with Libya and orders all those inside the
Libyan embassy to leave the country by April 29.
A minor earthquake centered in Pennsylvania sends shock waves along the East
Coast from Washington to New York. No injuries or damage were reported.
The U.S. Supreme Court rules that courts cannot award child custody on the
basis of race after a case involving a white woman who lost her daughter when
she married a Blackman.
David Kennedy , the son of the late Sen. Robert
Kennedy is found dead on the floor of his hotel
room in Palm Beach. Later, sheriff’s chemists
discover traces of cocaine and Demerol in the
body of David Kennedy.
The White House proposes rewards as high as
$500,000 for informing on terrorists and asks for
new federal penalties against those helping
officially labeled terrorist governments and
organizations.
Four churches in Mannford, Oklahoma, all filled
with parishioners, are hit by a tornado, sending
some worshipers into closets and under pews and
leaving at least one dead.
President Reagan In Peking -
President Regan arrives for a six-day
visit which will hopefully, bring new
stability to U.S.-Chinese relations.
President Reagan assails aggressions
and expansionism by the Soviet Union in
his first major speech in China, and, at
the same time, lectured his communist
hosts on the virtues of individual liberty
and free enterprise.

President Reagan signs a new cultural accord and an income-tax agreement
with China and witnesses the initialing of agreements on cooperation in the
peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the expansion of an American management
training program.
Consumer prices on March rose only .2 percent, providing evidence that strong
economic growth in the first quarter wouldn’t push inflation as high as some had
expected.
Campaigning in Austin - Gary Hart calls Walter Mondale
part of “a failed leadership that is hostage to entrenched
interests and mortgaged to the status quo.”
Medical - Government scientists say they have found the
virus that probably causes AIDS, a discovery that has led
to a blood test for potential victims.
Music news - Did you know the members of the
Thompson Twins hale from separate countries? - Lead
singer Tom Bailey is British; percussionist Alannah Currie is from New Zealand
and synthesizer player Joe Leeway is South African. They’re described as a
synth-pop dace band, which is the current trend in England. They’ve already had
three hits over there - “Lies,” “Love on Your
Side,” and “We Are Detective.”

Actress Shirley Jones and producer Marty Ingels
announce a settlement with the National Enquirer in a
$20 million libel lawsuit filed over an article asserting
that the couple suffered marital and drinking problems.
Television news -
NBC will debut “Welcome to the Fun Zone” on June 2.
Three unknown comedians - Rusty Cundieff, Charles
Zucker and Tawny Moyer are guest hosts on the shot
which will also feature comedy, variety music videos and live musical
performances. John Candy will appear in a comedy tame. Also look for Howie
Mandel. Dr. Demento is the show’s announcer.
