EBay Inc. reports a 28% rise in first-quarter
earnings, thanks to international sales.
Almost 3 million around the world now use Research
in Motion’s “Blackberry” device. The parent company
is Canadian. The BlackBerry’s original and most
popular use, use as an e-mail device, but rival
Microsoft is about to make a competing technology.
BlackBerry’s name comes from the supposed
resemblance of the miniature keyboard on its original
device to the beads of a fruit. It began life as a high-
ed gadget for Wall Street investment bankers,
Washington politicians and corporate executives.
Global demand for chips in notebook computers and
mobile phones helped Intel Corp boost its first-
quarter profit nearly 25%.
Adobe Systems Inc. announces that it plans to buy Macromedia Inc. in an all-
stock deal valued at more than $3 billion. Macromedia is known for Flash
animation, widely used on websites and on mobile devices. Other products
include Dreamweaver and FreeHand.
Federal drug enforcement officials launch a crackdown on operators of rogue
pharmacies on the Internet. More than 20 have been arrested in an alleged
scheme to smuggle and resell millions of doses of prescription drugs from India
through hundreds of websites.
Sports - ABC announces that “Monday Night Football” will move to ESPN
beginning in 2006.

Infinity says it will purchase KEAR (106.9) in San Francisco. For years, it has
been run by religious-conservative Family Radio.
Sirius Satellite announces that it is creating a 24-hour Martha Stewart channel.
They’ll pay her about $7.5 million for each of four years. Sirius has about 1.24
million subs.
