Wall Street suffers its worst collapse since the 1987 market crash as panic
selling wipes out hundreds of billions of dollars. The Dow drops 617 and Nasdaq
falls 355 points. The latest plunge added to already substantial losses among the
tech stocks, shares that had rocketed to unprecedented levels in January and
February.
A federal appeals court rules that Elian
Gonzalez must remain in America while it
continues to assess his legal right to seek
asylum. In Miami’s Little Havana community, a
hundred people are keeping vigil outside the
home where 6-year-old Elian is living.
Texas Gov. George W. Bush, the presumptive
GOP nominee adds rival Sen. John McCain to
his stable of campaign advisors.
The parents of Dylan Kiebold, one of the teen-age gunmen responsible for the
shooting rampage at Columbine High, apologizes to victims of last year’s
massacre. Kiebold and classmate Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher
and wounded dozens more at the school last April 20. “There are no words to
convey how worry we are for the pain that has been brought upon the community
as a result of our son’s actions.”
The discovery of an ancient dinosaur heart - the first ever - reveals that many of
these creatures were almost certainly warm-blooded. The heart it’s believed is 66
million years old.
High Tech - Microsoft unveils “Pocket PC” saying it’s larger than rival Palm’s top-
selling products, including the Palm V personal information manager.
Radio news - Sirius Satellite Radio will launch the first of three
broadcast satellites for its audio service - Sirius-1 on June 28,
Sirius-2 will follow in September and Sirius-3 in October. The
company has line-up Ford, BMW, Jaguar, Maza, Chrysler,
Dodge, Jeep and others to get radios in cars.
Syndicated morning show personality Tom Joyner
announces the formation of BlackAmericaweb, a new online
service aimed at serving African-American community. He’s teamed with Tavis

Smiley, who does political commentary on Joyner’s daily show, broadcast on 90+
stations.
Show biz - Madonna learns from a routine prenatal scan that her baby with
British director Guy Ritchie will be a boy.
Heather Mills (32), Paul McCartney’s girlfriend will
receive $320,000 compensation for a 1993 accident
in which she lost a leg after being run down by a
police motorcyclist in London.
Mick Jagger and his company Jagged Films are
teaming with Martin Scorsese on a Hollywood
movie about a pop star. Titled “The Long Play,” the
project is being billed as a no-holds-barred expose
of the pop world.
Television news - After announcing a new “Star Trek series for next year, a
contingent of “Star Trek” fans rally outside Paramount Pictures, urging the studio
to create a new series featuring George Takei as Capt. Sulu. Lets see what
happens.
NBC cancels “Battery Park” and will replace it with Frasier reruns.
“Survivor” a new summer reality adventure series will premiere on May 31. CBS
has been teasing audiences about the new series and finally announced the
premiere date.
Discovery Channel’s “Walking With Dinosaurs”
draws over 10 million viewers, making it the most-
watched documentary every on cable television.
