(Bombing of Libya)
Diplomats estimate that about 100 were killed in the pre-dawn attack and doctors
say the dead include Libyan leader Col Moammar Kadafi’s baby daughter.
48 hours later - Ending speculation that he was killed...
Moammar Kadafi
appears on television and radio
condemning the United States and Britain for the
bombing attack on Libya. “We are ready to die and we
are ready to carry on fighting and defending our country,”
said Kadafi.
President Regan declares that the U.S. air raid on Libya
was a victory over terrorism, but made it clear that he
does not expect the attack to be the last use of military
force against Col Moammar Kadafi’s regime.
Terrorists in Lebanon strike at Britain, killing three of its nationalists over Libya.
They also tried to blow up an El Al jetliner in London and tossed a firebomb at
U.s. Marine quarters in Tunisia.
The Reagan Administration says Col. Moammar Kadafi’s days are probably
numbered and thousands protest through West Europe, the bombing of Libya by
the U.S.
President Reagan decides to dismantle two U.S. nuclear submarines to keep the
United States within the limits of the controversial SALT II treaty when a new
Trident nuclear submarine goes to sea.
The Federal Reserve Board cuts its discount rate to 6.5% from 7%.
Music news
- Journey’s new “Raised
On Radio” album - the group’s first in
three years, will not have video support.
Longtime manager Herbie Herbert says -
“We’re not trying to say, ‘to hell with you
MTV;’ we’ve worked well with them in the
past. We’ve simply come to the
realization that videos aren’t as
meaningful or important to us as they are
to others.” Herbert says that Journey is
more interested in establishing a solid

radio base and has attempted to “create songs with a timeless quality.”
The chart impact of Def Jam/Columbia
rap artist
LL Cool J’s
debut album
“Radio,” suggests that rap artists can
enjoy widespread album success and
appeal to a broader demographic than
just urban listeners. LL Cool J had an
underground rap following prior to the
release of this album. Last year his “I
Need A Beat” on the then independently
distributed Def Jam label was a popular
rap hit in the Northeast. So far, the label
hasn’t prepared any videos for LL Cool J, but he has appeared on “Soul Train,”
and “American Bandstand” as well as the movies “Krush Groove” and “Wildcats.”
A spokesman for Columbia says - “There are two reasons for waiting. The first is
that if we make it early on, MTV can just say he’s not making their kind of music.
But if we wait until he’s a star, then he’s bigger than rap. I think ultimately it’s to
radio’s credit that we’ve sold LL without a video.”
