economic and, if necessary military means, we shall
persevere until freedom and democracy are restored
to the people of the Falkland Islands.”
A freestanding section of a highway bridge (under
construction) collapses in a tangle of steel in East
Chicago - 15 are dad with dozens hurt.
In Cairo - Five Muslim fanatics are executed at dawn at a remote army base for
the assassination of President Anwar Sadat.
Falklands - Secretary of State Alexander Haig Jr. meets privately with Argentine
officials for more than 11 hours of talks.
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher tells Parliament that the latest Argentine
proposals to avert war over the Falkland Islands “fall short in some important
respects” but she is leaving the door open for further diplomatic efforts to solve
the Falkland crisis.
Breaking a long self-imposed silence, FBI Director

strongly defends the FBI’s controversial Abscam
investigation and has made clear that he will use the same
undercover tactics again if necessary.
In Anaheim, CA, a Santa Ana wind-whipped fire levels 300
apartments, leaving hundreds homeless. The fire, about a mile
from Disneyland, did at $50 million in damage.
Passing - Archibald MacLeish - playwright, poet and winner of three Pulitzer
Prizes. He was 89.

Television news - KHJ-TV horror host
Elvira
will
preside over the KHJ-TV showing of “The Mad
Magician” - a 1954 3D movie starring Vincent Price.
You’ll have to pick-up 3D glasses at 7-11 stores.
Cagney and Lacy will get one more shot at trying to
build ratings. The show, which premiered in March, will
air one more episode on Sunday. The series stars Tyne
Daly and Meg Foster. Will it be back next season?
Phil Donahue, who has decided to leave NBC’s “Today”
show next month, signs with ABC to become a
contributor to a new late-night news program.
Debuting on the NBC Nightly news last week - Tom Brokaw and Roger Mudd.
Ratings say they came in second behind the CBS Evening News with Dan
Rather.
Soap “Days of Our Lives” just isn’t the same after last week’s
suicide of actress
Brenda Benet
, who portrayed Lee
Williams in the series. Many say she was pre-occupied with
the death of her son - Christopher Sean Bixby, who died of
acute epiglotitis at age six - almost a year ago on March 1
1981. She was once married to actor Bill Bixby.
Cable TV - Qube is the word - the two-way cable system is
introduced in Pittsburgh this week. So far, it has been in
Columbus and Cincinnati. Qube is owned by Time-Warner.
NBC-TV will expand its hit “Smurfs” show from an
hour to 90 minutes and add three new children’s
programs. One is the “Gary Coleman Show” adapted
from Coleman’s recent “The Kid With The Broken
Halo” made-for-TV-movie.

Music news - David Crosby is arrested in a backstage dressing room at the
Dallas rock club Cardi’s after police discovered a large quantity of cocaine and a
.45-caliber pistol on him.
After a disappointing second album, U2 is auditioning new producers.

Randy Meisner
is making a new solo
album with ex-Heart producer Mike Flicker.
Billy Joel fractures his right wrist and breaks his left
thumb in a motorcycle accident on Long Island. As
part of his physical therapy, doctors say he will begin
piano-exercises with his right hand in about a week.
The other car ran a red light when Joel’s 1978 Harley
plowed into it.
Rita Marley, widow of reggae star Bob Marley, decides to cancel her first North
American tour.
Record retailers are saying MTV is having
a positive affect on artists not normally
played on tightly formatted album rock or
top-40 radio formats. Two artists cited -
Atom & The Ants and Human League,
Duran Duran and
Classics Nouveaux
.
People are coming in and buying more of
these artists because of MTV airplay.
Radio news -
Dr. Don Rose
, mornings at KFRC San
Francisco (A top-40 AM station still doing well in the
ratings) - celebrates his 2000
th
show on the station. Says
Rose, “After 2,000 shows, it’s still a challenge. Any
competent deejay can be good for a couple months, but
the real test is to constantly keep your audience
entertained and stimulated.” Rose describes his show as
“rock and talk or talk and rock with eight songs per hour, 12 commercial minutes
and the rest me.”
WBBM-FM Chicago is changing over to consultant Mike Joseph’s “Hot Hits” top-
40 format. Apparently, the format is doing well at sister CBS-FM station WCAU-
FM in Philadelphia.
