President Carter
imposes more economic sanctions
against Iran and warns that he may take military action of
the U.S. hostages are not freed soon.
The Carter Administration announces a $160 million shot
in the arm for the sagging home construction industry
through lower mortgage interest rates and reduced
financing costs for builders.
Visits Iran hostage - Barbara Timm emerges from a 45-
minute meeting with her son inside the U.S. Embassy in
Tehran. She says her son, Marine Sgt. Kevin Hermening is in excellent health
and a “better, stronger” person.
The national consumer price index rose 13.3% last year.
Recession - New government figures show the economy grew at an annual rate
of 1.1%, according to first quarter figures. President Carter, saying the nation
probably was entering a “mild and short” recession, holds out hope for a sharp 8
percentage point drop in the rate of inflation beginning this summer.
The Post Office asks approval to increase charges for mailing a first-class letter
from 15 to 20 cents, effective early next year.
The Army reveals that it contaminated much of the New York subway system in
Manhattan with a “harmless stimulant agent.” In a 1966 germ test. A report says
the tests were performed without knowledge or cooperation of the New York
Transit Authority or the Police Department.

Ronald
Reagan
takes over as auctioneer and sells a donkey, then joked
to the crowd - “Al these months that’s what I’m trying to do is get
rid of the jackass.” He amplified his statement saying that a
jackass is “a symbol of the other party. I didn’t mean anything
personal by that, because I’ve got nothing against jackasses.”
Sports
- The San Antonio Spurs offer George Gervin $8.775
million over the next 40 years, but the offer is “not even close” to what he wants.

Press conference - Instead of announcing he’ll fight Mike Weaver as everyone
expected, Muhammad Ali says he’ll fight Larry Homes instead. Holmes - a WBA
champ, has been undefeated in 34 bouts.

would willingly have killed him had the
White House given him the go-ahead
and would have considered it “justifiable homicide.” Liddy said he proposed, eight
years ago, that Anderson be murdered for allegedly exposing the identity of a
U.S intelligence agent working abroad - then waited in vain for an order from the
White House to carry out the murder. Liddy told Anderson in front of the TV
audience - “You were a pain in the butt” to the White House. But you also were
seriously damaging American ability to conduct foreign policy.” Liddy was
promoting his newly published autobiography “Will.”
The supreme Court holds that police generally may not enter an individual’s
home to arrest them without first obtaining a warrant.
Passing - French writer-philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre - the nearly blind
existentialist who devoted his life to the precept that “man is responsible for what
he is,” He was 74.

- Lafayette Electronics - at one time one of the
country’s largest consumer electronic chains, is
liquidating 60 of its remaining 68 stores. At one point the
60-year-old company maintained 125 retail outlets in 15
states. Lafayette blamed its troubles on reversals in the
market for stereo equipment spurred by increased
competition and a decline in sales of CB radios, whey
they stocked heavily. The company has been in
bankruptcy proceedings since January.

Get ready for an all-sports radio network. Enterprise
Radio will begin operations early next year! Owner Scott
Rasmussen, president of Ramussen Enterprises says he is “in the process of
negotiating with several major league and college teams” for the rights to live

sporting events for the network. Rasmussen was one of the founders of cable-
TV’s ESPN television sports network. Enterprise Radio will originate, via satellite
relay, from Rasmussen’s studio complex in Avon, CT.
Ratings - After jettisoning its disco format -
WGCI-FM Chicago is on a ratings rebound
with a blend of r&b, contemporary jazz and
r&b pop. In Philadelphia - WFIL (which is
now more a/c) is at a 4.2 share. Rival WIP is
at a 6.0. AM 990/WZZD which hit a high 2.9
share with disco, is down again to a 1.9
share (went religious with new owners).
New York - WKTU has slipped from a first-
place 8.7 to third - at 6.0. WABC is up to a
3.5 from a 3.3. WBLS-FM slid from a 7.8 to a
5.6. WOR - 6.9 share and all-news WINS -
6.2. WNBC scores with a 4.0 (beating
WABC handily).
Don Imus scores a 5.0 share in the morning
at WNBC. Dan Ingram, who does mornings
at WABC scores with 4.6, down from Harry
Harrison’s last morning ratings at 5.1.
WNBC is promoting itself as New York’s
next #1 station. WNBC has a weekly cume
of 2.84 million while WABC has 3.13 million.
More WABC radio
- As Al Brady Law has
resigned (Apr 10). He replaced Glenn
Morgan as PD in October. Morgan, is now
with Mutual Radio. Looks like WTIC-AM PD
Jay Clark is the new WABC program
director.
During the last ratings as indicated above -
WABC has a
3.5
rating with Dan Ingram mornings at a 4.6… Middays with Ron
Lundy/Johnny Donovan - 4.3 (up from a 3.5). Afternoon Bob Cruz is up to a 5.6
from a 5.1 and at night, newcomer Howard Hoffman is losing numbers - down to
a 3.9 from a 4.4.
Los Angeles - KHJ-Am has bounced back in the ratings under PD Chuck Martin.
In the Jan-Feb 1979 ratings - KHJ hit its lowest - a 1.8 share. It’s now up to a

3.0. Martin says the station got lost and was playing FM music on AM. He says
he has taken the station back to “true” top-40. The station now has as its air
talent - Rick Dees. Banana Joe, Pat Garrett, Tony Maddox, Terry Moreno and
Nick Morales.
Legendary AM Top-40 station bites the dust as WQAM Miami goes country.
AM stereo - Looks like the FCC may favor the Magnavox stereo system. Lets
see.
Music news -
Famed disco Studio 54 is sold by its owners
Steve Rubell
and
Ian Schrager for a reported $5 million. Both are spending 3 1.2
years in jail for tax evasion. Buyers are restaurateur Mark
Fleischmann and disco light and sound engineer Jeff London.
The are vowing to “bring the club back to where it was before.”
David Geffen is returning to the music business with a new, as
yet - unnamed record label. It will be a joint venture with
Warner Brothers. The label will become Warner
Communications fourth record company besides Warner Bothers, Atlantic and
Electra/Asylum.
Johnny Rotten
is out touring with his new band - “Public
Image.” Rotten was with the Sex Pistols.
“The Spinners” are back after five years of being off the
charts. But their hit, “Working My Way Back To You” is a
disco song, of which the likes are disappearing from top-40
radio. Spinner member Pervis Jackson believes it and the
album which it comes from - “Body Language” are out of
sync with the times. “We’re not going to release another
single from the album. The disco thing has fallen off so much
that it would be a real big gamble. Let’s face it, the album’s
outdated.”
A Los Angeles federal grand jury charges that Leaveil Degree of “The Whispers”
and his brother, and a U.S Postal Service truck driver conspired to steal a mail
truck that contained an estimated $1.8 million in jewels and furs.

CBS beats ABC in the ratings - with 8 of the
10 highest rated programs in last week’s
Nielsen ratings. For the season - CBS has a
19.6, ABC with 19.5 and NBC with 17.5.
