King Hussein of Jordan drives out pro-Egyptian elements in his army and
government in a military coup d’etat.
Communist Secretary Khrushchev offers to join Japan in urging the United States
and Britain to ban nuclear tests.
President Eisenhower views with “deep concern” the prospect of big funds cut in
U.S. propaganda activities. He says there is actually a “pressing need’ to expand
this work in many parts of the world. But Rep. Rooney (D-NY, chairman of a
House Appropriations Subcommittee figures the American taxpayer hasn’t been
getting his money’s worth in the way of the U.S. Information Agency has been
run. The new budget at $106 million is 26% below the President’s request.
The Census Bureau reports that more women are working to help their husbands
with the higher cost of living. Working wives increased by about 5 million
between 1947 and 1956.

Marilyn Monroe
chief stockholder and main asset
of Marilyn Monroe Productions Inc, upstages her
firm’s old board of directors and elects a new one,
including an in-law and a friend of her husband.
She re-elected herself as head of the company.
Charles Van Doren marries the secretary he hired
last winter to help him answer his fan mail.
Attacks photographers - Anthony Franciosa, hot-
tempered stage and screen actor, is arrested after
a shouting, kicking melee with newsmen near Hollywood which actress Shelley
Winters pleaded, “please don’t have him arrested.” Ms. Winters is the actor’s
fiancée.
Dean Martin’s first (solo) picture “Ten Thousand Bedrooms” opens, but with no
wild enthusiasm for the singer/actor. One critic said that the title was the most
exciting part of the film. Of Mr. Martin he wrote, “When things get dull, he bursts
into song, and then suddenly everything is just as dull.” Another described him as
“a personable actor with a nice enough singing style, but he’s just another nice-
looking crooner without Jerry Lewis.”

Jerry Lewis has been busy too, He held a burglary suspect at gunpoint at his
pacific Palisade home until police arrived. Lewis told police the suspect rang his
back door bell about 8:30pm and handed him a note. The comedian closed the
door and was reading the note when he noticed the man trying to get into the
front door. He pressed a silent burglar alarm, alerting
police and took a 38-caliber revolver to the front door.
Police say the note was garbled.
An explosion and fire destroys the former home of
James Dean
. The home was located at 14611 Sutton
Street in suburban Sherman Oaks. The present
owners, Mr. and Mrs. Warner Allen were not at home
when the blast rocked the area round the large two
story home.

Audrey Hepburn on herself:
“My hair looks better straight and pulled back from
my face. Having it fluffy on the side accentuates
my faults. I envy pretty girls, but I know it is a
mistake to try to be like someone else.” Audrey is
5-7 and tops the scales at 110 pounds. “I have
small bones and when people tell me I should
weigh more I know it would not be becoming. For
reasons of health, I went to 123 pounds and I
didn’t like it.”
Television news -
Armstrong Circle Theatre now presented on NBC,
will move to CBS. Armstrong will continue to
sponsor the weekly dramas.
Big quiz winner - Robert Stram, who is only 10-years-old, becomes the biggest
quiz show prize winner in the history of television after he jumped his earnings to
$192,000. . Robert answered a multi-part question, which gave him his third
bundle of $64,000 on the show.
NBC-TV says it is experimenting with using tape on some of its more important
shows. Among the shows recently televisions from tape for Western NBC
viewers were “The Steve Allen Show,” “Washington Square,” Caesar’s Hour,”
and “Your Hit parade.” The network currently is taping “Today” “Home,” “Truth or
Consequences,” The Nat King Cole Show” “The Dinah Shore Show” and “The
Jonathan Winters Show,” in addition to the Huntley-Brinkley news.
