The space shuttle Discovery thunders into space. The crew includes Sen. Jake
Garn (R-Utah) - the first elected official to travel into space... Later in the week,
the crew tries to save an $80 million Hughes satellite. The crew whacked a lever
on the side of the satellite, thought to be stuck. It turns out; the satellite was just
not working.
Japan Prime Minister
Yasuhiro Nakasone
says
that his decision to raise the quota of Japanese
auto exports into the U.S. was an “error of
judgment” resulting from a misreading of potential
American reaction. The Us. Congress, angered by
Japan’s $36.8 billion trade surplus and what it
perceived as Japanese cars flooding the U.S.
market, recently passed a non-binding resolution
to retaliate against Japan if it refused to open its
markets to more American competition.

For a call from 11 to 22 miles - the day rate for the initial minute climbs to 46
cents from 38 cents. Additional minutes would now be 25 cents each - up from
21 cents
For a call from 23 to 55 miles - the day rate for the initial minute would rise to 51
minutes from 45 cents. Initial minutes would be raised to 30 cents from 26 cents.
Cable television magnate
Ted Turner
(the mouth of
the South), saying he always wanted to own his own
network, launches a hostile bid totaling nearly $3
billion to take over CBS. The deal to shareholders is a
complicated package of stocks, bonds and other
securities for a 67% stake in the network. Analysts
say the offer comes to about $150 per stock. CBS
vows vigorously to fight the takeover saying “The
unusual number and complexity of Turner’s proposed
securities make it difficult for CBS to comment at this
time. Once we have evaluated the materials, CBS will
inform its shareholders of the merits of Turner’s proposal.” None of Turner’s offer

One of the bigger hits so far this year - “Like a Virgin”
by Madonna - written by
Billy Steinberg and Tom
Kelly
. Lyricist Steinberg says the song “came from
personal experience. I wasn’t just trying to somehow get
that racy worked virgin in a lyric. I was saying, from
personal experience, that I may not really be a virgin.
I’ve been battered romantically and emotionally like
many people, but I’m starting a new relationship and it
just feels so good, it’s healing all the wounds and
making me feel like I’ve never done this before, because it’s so much deeper and
more profound than anything I’ve ever felt.”
Barbara Bel Geddes
- after leaving “Dallas” several
years ago is returning. The question is - what’s going to
happen to her replacement - Donna Reed?
Loretta Young - who had been set to return to series
television after 24 years, drops out of the Aaron Spelling
show “Dark Mansions.” Young (72) was set for a get-
acquainted meeting with the other cast of the new
Gothic serial that ABC plans to introduce next season.
Her agent says she is dropping out because of “creative
differences over the story.”
Howard Cosell hosts the last season installment of “Saturday Night Live.” There’s
a very good change Billy Crystal and Martin Short will not return next season. His
Fernando character is famous for the line “You look mahviluss.” Martin Short’s
nerdy character “Ed Grimley” has been very popular.
Actor-director
Warren Beatty
wins a decision in
arbitration that will require ABC-TV to run the entire
200-minute version of “Reds.” ABC wanted to cut 10-
minutes out of the broadcast so that it would not
spillover into the news. Beatty’s position was that, yes
- you could cut or edit films for nudity etc - but you
can’t cut movies like sausages to fit preconceived time
slots.
