The U.S. warns the Soviet Union to keep its hands off of Lithuania or would “put
at risk” the entire U.S.-Soviet relationship, warns Secretary of State James A
Baker III. Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev decided to apply even greater
political and economic pressure on Lithuania to force an end to the Baltic
republic’s efforts to secede from the Soviet Union.
John Poindexter
, former National Security Advisor is
convicted on five charges of attempting to cover-up the Iran-
Contra scandal before it engulfed the Reagan administration.
He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a
$250 thousand fine for each of five counts.
Police and firefighters launch a grisly all-night search through
the smoking hull of a North Sea ferry, looking for the bodies of
victims who died in a possible arson attack on the ship during
a voyage from Norway to Denmark. So far, 110 have died with
some 36 still missing.
The Hubble Space Telescope - the most advance telescope of its kind is
launched into space by hitching a ride on the space shuttle Discovery. The
Hubble, free from the atmosphere and the distortions it causes, is expected to
produce extraordinarily sharp images. The $2 billion device is named for Edwin
P. Hubble, the astronomer who in the 1920’s, discovered that the universe is
expanding, is destined to forever change.
Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev threatens tough action on Lithuania on its
month-old independence bid, by threatening to block oil and other products. The
president is giving them two days to reverse their challenge to Moscow’s rule.
East Germany apologizes to Israel and all Jews for the Nazi Holcaust and
accepted joint responsibility for the slaughter of 6 million Jews during WWII.
The Vatican announces that
Mother Teresa
(79) is giving up her life’s work due to ill health.
She resigned as superior general of her
Missionaries of Charity order. That order runs
over 400 homes for the destitute around the
world.

Starkist Tuna says that it will not purchase tuna captured in nets along with
dolphins nor will it buy fish caught with gill or drift nets. The H.J. Heinz-owned
company says it will buy only tuna that has been certified as dolphin-safe by an
observer on a tuna boat.
Pepsi-Cola signs a $3 billion deal to double production and sales of soft drinks in
the Soviet Union. In return, Pepsi will receive at least 10 Soviet-built ships in a
barter agreement. Soviet law prohibits foreign companies from taking profits out
of the country in hard currency and so far, the ruble is not a convertible
instrument.
A herd of 400 plus wild pigs wander into the shoulder of highway 4, near
Disneyworld in Kissimmee. Traffic slowed and snarled, but no one was injured.

Farm Aid IV raps-up, breaking $1 million
in pledges. Farm Aid cofounders John
Mellencamp, Willie Nelson and Neil
Young were on hand with a surprise
appearance by Elton John.
MCI says it will buy Telecom USA for
$1.25 billion. The move will make MCI
the nation’s #2 carrier behind AT&T.

Twin Peaks - The quirky new ABC soap
opera, with its mix of horror and humor
amid a small town, scores a nice 33% of the audience in its two-hour debut.

CBS late night talkshow “The
Pat Sajak
Show” is cancelled
after 15 months. Sajak is in Europe on a long-planned
vacation. During the last ratings sweeps (in February), the
Sajak show pulled a 10 share, with Johnny Carson pulling a
19 share for the same time period.
Tommy Lee of Motley Crew is treated and released for a
mild concussion after falling on stage in New Haven, CT.
Lee was swinging down a rope from off-stage scaffolding
when he hit his head. The stunt was suppose to be part of the show’s routine

Ray Combs
of “Family Feud” - is arrested in Cincinnati
for a trespassing complaint saying he appeared on stage at a
comedy club he co-owns.
Hakuhodo Inc, a large Japanese advertising agency sues Rob
Lowe, saying it lost $1.6 million after videotape depicting the
actor having sex with a teen-age girl became public last year.
As part of his contract, Lowe promised that he would not undertake any action
that would damage the business or reputation of Hakuhodo or the car. Lowe was
doing commercials for Cultus, a car from Suzuki Motors.
