In Bangkok - a time bomb filled with nails explodes in the parking lot of a hotel
about 90 minutes before defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger was to arrive
for a state dinner.
Two U.S. aircraft carrier battle groups in the Mediterranean are given new orders
and it could be to launch another round of military action against Libya.
A State Department aide says that the U.S. would not cancel its widely reported
threat of a military strike against Libya unless Col Moammar Kadafi called off his
plans for new attacks against Americans and other steps to end his support for
terrorism.
In Miami - a gun battle erupted after the FBI closed in on suspected bank
robbers, leaving two agents and two suspects dead.
The 12 Common Market countries impose diplomatic sanctions against Libya
including reductions in embassy staff levels and tighter visa requirements.
IBM Profit rises 3.1% in the first quarter.
Clint Eastwood wins the mayor race in Carmel, and later,
gets a call from President Reagan. “What is an actor who
once played with a monkey in a movie doing in politics?”
asked the President tongue-in-cheek.
Dublin - Jennifer Guinness, the wife of a member of the
Guinness-brewing and banking dynasty - one of Ireland’s
wealthiest families - was kidnapped by a three-masked
gunmen demanding a $2.6-million ransom.

Passing - Songwriter Linda Creed (37). Her
“Greatest Love of All” is a top hit by Whitney
Houston. She composed songs that produced
more than 20 gold and platinum records for such
artists as Teddy Pendergrass, Dionne Warwick, the
Spinners, Johnny Mathis, Dusty Springfield and
Connie Stevens.

Wayne Gretzky sets a Stanley Cup record for assists as the Edmonton Oilers win
their ninth straight NJHL playoff series win a 5-1 defeat over Vancouver. Gretzky
scored a power play goal in the third period and his two assists gave the NHL
scoring champion a record 103 in the playoffs.
On “Saturday Night Live” - Oprah Winfrey hosts with musical guest Joe Jackson.

Debbie Drake, a television
physical-fitness personality
during the 1960’s and ‘70’s, came
through surgery for a shattered
leg and a procedure to restore a
collapsed lung. She was struck in
a hit-and-run accident on March
27 as she stood on a sidewalk in
Matamoros, Mexico. Her
syndicated programs, “The
Debbie Drake Show,” and later
“Debbie drake’s dancercise,”
aired from 1960-1978. She also
authored four books. She has
never given her age.
Patrick Duffy will return to
“Dallas”” next month, although his
character, Bobby Ewing,
apparently died at the end of last
season.
