On a directive from President Reagan, Secretary of State Alexander M. Hair Jr.
flies to London and then on to Buenos Aires to press Britain and Argentina for a
peaceful solution of the Falkland Islands crisis.
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher declared
that Argentine withdrawal from the Falkland
Islands is an “absolute requirement” before there
can be any negotiation or solution to the crisis.
British officials on the Falkland Islands appeal to
London for evacuation of the Argentine-occupied
islands before any hostilities breakout. 1,800
British citizens occupy the island.
Argentina’s military leaders approve a proposed
solution to the Falkland crisis. It would grant the
British islanders a measure of self-government
but would give Argentina sovereignty over the
disputed area.
Wholesale prices edged down by .1% last month for the second month in a row.
President Regan admonishes the Soviets to “butt out” of the Falkland Islands
crisis. There are reports that Russia is giving Argentina intelligence data on the
movement of the British fleet toward the disputed islands.
Banking officials predict that thousands of financial institutions with 25 million
customers will eventually be tied into a new nationwide network of electronic
banking terminals. Several have already begun such as the Plus System, Cirrus
and other regional networks.
A fire in the overcrowded Hudson County Jail (NJ) kills seven prisoners whose
partly charred bodies were found huddled in a corner of their dormitory cell on
the eighth floor. The fire was believed to have started in a mattress.
Three television networks boycotted a White House luncheon address by
President Reagan to protest new rules on media coverage of the President. ABC,
CBS and the Independent Network News decided against covering the event
because only one television correspondent was allowed into the State dining
Room, while all cameras were permitted.

The body of a women, believe to be the intended target of a gunman who shot
and killed three Good Samaritans - all CBS employees when they tried to stop
her abduction, was found in an alley. She was the fourth victim of the unidentified
killer who gunned down the CBs employees - two engineers and a technician
when they tried to stop him from kidnapping her from a lonely rooftop garage on
a Hudson River pier. The men were slain while returning to their cars after work
at nearby CBS. They saw the killer trying to force the resisting woman into a
white van. They tried to intervene and the man turned to the and said, “what did
you see.” He then pulled out a .22-caliber pistol and shot one of the men behind
the ear. The other two turned to run and he shot them in the back.

Technology - The price on
videocassette rentals has dropped to a
$1 a day from $2.50 last year - at many
outlets.
Atari’s new Pac-Man home video game is selling like hotcakes. It’s $34.95.
Sports - Tracy Caulkins, a 19-year-old freshman at the University of Florida,
wins the 400-yard individual medley at the U.S. short course championships in
Gainesville, FL for her 37 th major victory - beating legend Johnny Weissmuller
who had 36.
