President Eisenhower says unemployment is on the decline, saying some 25,000
more were employed in March.
Strike call fails - A bold rebel uprising is stamped out under police gunfire in
Havana and set off a Batista government counteroffensive that raged through the
night.
Drowned - Dr. Mark Mills, a top atomic physicist and expert in jet propulsion is
killed in a helicopter crash at the atomic test site in the pacific. The helicopter
was forced into the water by a rainsquall off one of the islands in the Eniwetok
Atoll.
President Eisenhower serves notice on Congress, the armed services and
military industries that he will fight to the finish for his Pentagon reforms. “I don’t
care just who is against this thing. It just happens that I have got a little bit more
experience in military organization and the directing of unified forces than anyone
else in the active list.”
The Supreme Court voids denaturalization cases
against
Frank Costello
and five others, and he
wins citizenship. Costello was accused by the
government in 1953 of having obtained citizenship
through fraud - concealing nonpayment of income
taxes, a conviction for carrying a concealed
weapon and his activities as a bootlegger.
Beck cleansing - Teamsters President

Hoffa
announces plans to strip ex Teamsters President Dave Beck of some of
the trappings he acquired while boss. Hoffa said as of the end of this month,
Beck would be stripped of his union free office in Seattle and his union limo. He’s
also considering stripping Beck of his union-bought $160,000
Seattle home that includes a private movie theater. Hoffa also
announced the firing of five union organizers appointed by Beck,
including Dave Beck Jr., Beck’s son; Norman Gessert, Beck’s
nephew and a cousin of Mrs. Beck. The jobs pay up to $20,000
a year. The blows against Beck were the latest in a series that
have him since the senate Rackets Committee charged Beck
with “borrowing” $320,000 union funds and he decided to retire.

A Gallup Poll finds school principals feel the successful Sputnik launchings have
sparked thinking in curriculum changes. As critics demand that American schools
do something about the “challenge of Sputnik,” there is evidence that many of the
nation’s high schools are already moving to meet the challenge.

Tony Awards - “The Music Man” gets best musical in gala
ceremonies at the Waldorf Astoria. “Sunrise at Campobello
receives the award for best play. Helen Hayes gets best
dramatic actress for her role in “Time remembered” and to
Ralph Bellamy as the best dramatic actor for “Sunrise At
Campobello” - the play in which he impersonates the late
