Britain discloses a new defense program for the next five years, which reduces
its armed forces by nearly half and places the nation under the protection of
United States atomic capabilities.
President Eisenhower declares that Americans must place the objective of world
peace above all else - including tax cuts.
Communist Party Boss
Nikita Khrushchev
announces that the
Soviet government plans to stop interest and freeze repayment
of principal for 20 to 25 years on 260 billion rubles in bonds
purchased by Soviet citizens. Wage and salary earners had
bought the bonds through payroll deductions averaging 6 to 8
1/2% over the last two decades. Khrushchev said western
capitalists would never understand “this sort of thing.” To the
Soviet people, he exclaimed, “They will never believe you are
doing this of your own free will.” Questioned by Western newsman, some
Russians said they welcomed the move that stopping the loans will in effect;
increase their yearly incomes, by the month’s pay they contributed to the state.
The first lady - Mrs Dwight D. Eisenhower gives a spring luncheon
for Senators’ wives at the White House, but is snubbed by one of
them - Mrs Joseph McCarthy, wife of the Wisconsin senator. “I
didn’t see an invitation. I wouldn’t have gone anyway. When they
wouldn’t invite my husband to the White House because of his
fight against Communism, I would hardly go either.”
Unveiled - a tiny pill with is actually a miniature FM radio transmitter - is
demonstrated by doctors in New York. The plastic capsule is just over an inch
long and less then a half inch around. Mainly, doctors say it’s designed to tell
about pressures and muscular contractions in a digestive tract.

ends her 15-year
marriage to dancer/actor Gene Kelly. She’ll get a $500
thousand settlement extending over a period of years.
She charged mental cruelty. They’ve been in trial
separation for six months.
Jackie Gleason says he will retire from weekly
television in June because “I’m not doing right by the
public.” (of course, he would later change his mind).

coming from their $100 thousand Manhattan
apartment due to renovation. Meanwhile, a judge
is still sitting on a decision from a petition
brought on by the neighbor, Mrs Marjorie Ryan
for a temporary injunction to halt the renovation.

Four junior students at Villanova University are released after denying they
hurled eggs at singer Elvis Presley. Presley was in the middle of a song at a
concert in Philadelphia, when a half a dozen eggs were hurled at him from a
balcony.
Shirley Temple
(28) is signed as hostess and narrator
for a series of one-hour fairy tales on television. Some
of the shows in preparation - “The Pied Piper,”
Pinocchio” and “Hans Brinker.”
Italian actress Sophia Loren (22) travels to Hollywood for
the first time. She stepped off the plane among flashing bulbs, wearing a blue
knot dress and brown sable coat.

Disneyland adds some new attractions.
Included is a “look-into” attraction - a
series of scenes depicting the fairy tale of
Sleeping Beauty. Others include a new
streamlined train and a
house of the
future
(sponsored by Monsanto). The
house of the future will demonstrate use
of plastics in home construction, based
on a design by MIT. A number of
additions to the Rivers of the World jungle boat ride in Advertureland include two
giant animated gorillas, Indian water buffalo, African gazelle and antelope. An
army of cannibals will “menace” boats of passengers and huge butterflies will
hover in the jungle. A rifle range is being installed in Frontierland. The lake will
offer futuristic watercraft with boats made of fiberglass.

Television news - A fourth television
network begins broadcasting this week
with 133 stations - The NTA Film
Network. NTA (National Telefilms Associates) is the brainchild
of Ely Landau, the network’s president. It is the first time tat a
series of feature films will be promoted and advertised
nationally. The first film broadcast is “Suez” with Tyrone Power and Loretta
Young. NTA says they have more than 400 hours of feature films as well as 175
hours of TV series. Desilu Productions and 20th Century-Fox have agreements
to furnish pilots on at least 10 new series for the ‘57-’58 television season.
