January - The FCC reports that cable-TV rates have been rising four-times faster than inflation and they don’t like it… Is it DVD or Divx? It’s a battle at this year’s Consumer electronics Show - with promoters on both sides. So far - some 200,000 DVD players have been sold to consumers since the format was launched last spring. Like DVD - Divx’s medium is a 5-inch disc. The difference lies in sales and marketing. Instead of unlimited viewings, Divx consumers buy the disc for a suggested retail price of $4.99 and can watch the disc only for a specially outfitted DVD player - for $100 more than a regular player - linked by modem on a separate phone line to a Divx central computer. They can watch the movie as often as they want within a 48-hour period, then pay an extra fee for more viewing. You can play DVD’s for as many times as you wish…

More April - A federal judge in Los Angeles rules that a Canadian firm must relinquish the avery.net and Denison.net domain names to business supplies maker Avery Dennison Corp. The firm – FreeView Listings, must sell the domain names to Avery for $300 apiece – a $200 markup over what the firm paid for them. FreeView had reserved the names, along with thousands of other common surnames seeking e-mail addresses that contain their last names. FreeView allows people who share a surname to use the same domain name for e-mail... Intel Corp, stung my weakened demand, says it will cut 3,000 jobs.

May - Kodak and America Online team to deliver photos by Internet. Photographers can drop off  film from any type of camera and for an additional $5 to $7 have digital images returned to their AOL e-mail addresses within 48 hours. The service is being called “You’ve Got Pictures” and will available in the fall… Beginning in June, Yahoo users will be able to purchase certain AT&T services by clicking on an AT&T icon at key locations throughout Yahoo’s collection of web sites…

 June - As of mid-April, nearly 4 million DVD’s have been sold, and some say that’s the tip of the iceberg. Nearly 900 titles are in release. NBC agrees to buy a 4.99% stake in online content company CNET and a 19% stake in CNET’s Snap service. ...  Walt Disney Co. agrees to buy a 43% stake in Infoseek Corp...AT&T says it will buy cable giant TCI in an all-stock deal. The transaction is valued at $48 billion. It will give AT&T access to local phone markets as well...  July -  Internet stocks are hot. Yahoo Inc. zooms $26.38 to a record $199.25 for a 15% one-day advance. Some soared more than 50% in a day. Buying pressure is coming not from seasoned Wall Street professional’s adept at playing risky stocks, but from individual investors who appear to be falling over themselves trying to make a quick killing. Internet stocks have rallied feverishly since February… Buzz in computers - USB (universal serial bus) ports. USB can support a variety of peripherals via a hub that two to seven additional ports can plug into. It also moves data fast. Look for more peripherals to use USB plugs. Windows 98 has extensive USB support, unlike Windows 95.
