Shakur was cruising in a five-car convoy with Marion “Suge” Knight – head of Death Row Records when a white Cadillac pulled up next to Knight’s BMW 750 – about 11:15pm and opened fire. Police say Shakur was struck at least four times – twice in the chest. The Cadillac then sped off. Knight, who was driving, was grazed in the head by a bullet fragment. Both were coming from the Mike Tyson fight and were headed to Knight’s “Club 662” night club.

Rapper Tupac Shakur dies six days after he was shot four times in a street ambush. Surgeons had removed his right lung but he remained on a respirator in intensive care until his death.

It seats two with top speed to 80mph and goes about 90 miles on a charge… AT & T says it will invest $137.5 million in Hughes Electronics Corps DirecTV satellite service. The move will help the 1 ½ year-old company expand its marketing drastically. The service charges anywhere from $20 to $70 per month for its programming packages. In addition - the customer must spend between $500 and $900 for an 18-inch satellite dish and other receiving hardware… Linda Ellerbee teams up with Microsoft to do a monthly interview show on the Internet. It will be on Microsoft’s “Encarta” section and will be called “Encarta on the Record.” During the broadcast - a video image of Ellerbee and her guest will be displayed - updated every 8 seconds. You’ll need the proper equipment to listen to the audio… AT&T Corp. will close its 338 phone stores, eliminating 2,500 store jobs…

February – Ford Motor Co unveils the first all-natural gas powered passenger car. AOL will incorporate Microsoft’s Internet Explorer into the basic AOL software package. In return, Microsoft agrees to build direct access to America Online into a new version of its Windows 95 personal computer operating system. AOL  also agreed to offer Netscape’s browser, but customers who want it will have to make an extra effort to retrieve it online…  Netscape cuts a deal with CompuServe, giving its customers access to the Netscape browser. The deal will enable Compuserve’s 4.5 million customers to choose among several browsers - Netscape’s Navigator and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Everyone thought Microsoft had the fast track here, but it looks like that has been changed… MCI, which has been offering Internet service for about a year, says it will become more aggressive in signing Internet customers up. MCI will match AT&T’s offer of five hours of free Internet time a month to people who use its long distance service. MCI also plans to continue offering unlimited Internet service for $19.95 per month - the same as AT&T… Apple says it will post a record $700-million loss for the second fiscal quarter… Compaq Computer reported that its profit rose 8% and sales jumped 45% during the first quarter

April - Netscape says its Internet Browser – versions 2.0 and 2.01 will have trouble with daylight savings time. Says a spokesperson - “This affects people that are accessing a page twice within an hour time span. It’s a bug and we’re working as quickly as we can to fix it.” A repaired version should appear in a few weeks. In the meantime, Netscape has posted temporary repair suggestions at http://home.netscape.com... Technical and marketing glitches threaten to delay the planned fourth-quarter rollout of the digital videodisc. The tech specs are still under review by the DVD hardware manufacturers and won’t be finalized until the end of this month or possibly later. DVD’s will be the same size as an audio CD…

May - Hot at the Electronic Entertainment exposition in Las Vegas this week - Multi-Players, which allow a user to play interactive games on the Internet. MPath Interactive and rival Total Entertainment Network say they are launching national services this week that will allow gamers to play a wide range of personal computer games over the Internet. Sega announces plans to offer a modem attachment to allow online gaming… Also, Apple introduces a “Net Box” at the show. The boxes or network computers, make the Internet accessible to a broad range of consumers who can’t afford a traditional PC or don’t want to learn how to use one. In a separate action - IBM, Sun and Oracle Corp agree on a Net Box standard. Net boxes use a TV set instead of a computer monitor….  CompuServe says it is shifting most of its content to the Internet. Although it will cost millions of dollars to convert its content into hypertext markup language - the universal code governing the graphic-rich portion of the Internet, the transition will save the company money in the long run by making it easier and cheaper to produce those offerings. Microsoft Network and Prodigy and others have already begun the shift to the Web. Only America Online remains with 100% proprietary software. AOL has 5.5 million customers, CompuServe has 4.7 million…

The plan is an attempt to fend-off smaller long-distance providers, which gave grabbed $14 billion of the $80 billion longs distance market. More December - MCI says it will pull-out of its online music retailing business December 31st. “Marketplace MCI” was launched in April, 1995 along with 800-Music-Now, which came online seven months later, were touted as a way for consumers (especially in rural areas) to get access to wares available in larger cities.
