June  - Stereo TV Update  - Following the FCC’s March 29 approval of stereo TV, TV stations are getting ready to go stereo. NBC-TV seems to be out front. “The Tonight Show” is recorded but not broadcast in stereo for test purposes.” NBC’s “Friday Night Videos” is a prime candidate to move from FM simulcast to stereo broadcast in the future….. Most of the networks are gearing for stereo-audio broadcasts - it looks like sometime next year. Currently broadcasting is stereo are MTV and The Movie Channel. HBO expects to be in stereo by the end of the year. Stereo televisions should make their appearance beginning later this year. Sony Betamax already offers a VCR that records and plays back in stereo. Yes, all music videos are mixed for stereo sound… IBM getting more into the software game. IBM announced last month (May 14) that it would carry under the IBM log, new versions of five popular software programs published b Software Publishing Corp. of Mountain view, CA. The PFS series programs that will reappear as the new IBM Personal Computer assistant series are priced at between $60 and $149 and are designed  for word-processing, filing, graph-making, report-writing and financial analysis. Some small software companies say they are a little nervous about the IBM move… AT&T wins approval by the FCC for its new long- distance service - “ Reach Out America .” The plan offers two options; under the first one - a customer may place an hour’s worth of calls after 11pm and on weekends for a monthly fee of $10.00… MCI it is starting its own long-distance information service, but unlike AT&T, will charge less per call. MCI says it will follow AT&T’s system of allowing two free information calls so long as the MCI network is used for regular long-distance calls, but will charge 45 cents instead of 50 cents for each subsequent information call. The service is set to begin July 15….

August – IBM unveils a more powerful and lower-priced version of its popular Personal Computer - the PC-AT. It will force clones or “PC compatibles” to respond with more than price cuts - they’ll have to match the product… Ted Turner sends a letter to more than 8,000 cable operators, informing them of his intention of adding a 24-hour rock video music channel much like MTV… No sooner does Ted Turner enter the Music video channel business than MTV says it will begin a new channel aimed at older video viewers - just like Turner. “MTV II” as it’s been called will be “softer.” Turner’s channel (MVN) for “Music Video Network” is set to debut Oct 26… Looks like the USFL will play its third and final spring season in 1985, then switch to a fall slate in 1986 and competing directly with the NFL.
