White had resigned from his seat on the Board of Supervisors two weeks ago because of financial difficulties… Ernest Barnes, a judge with the Federal Trade Commission, orders the American Medical Association to abolish ethical standards that restrict advertising or solicitation of patients by doctors. The judge concluded that the AMA had engaged in a “conspiracy to restrain competition” - thus depriving the public of information need to make decisions about health care. The judge also ordered the AMA and its affiliates to end interference with the growth or operation of prepaid health care systems such as health maintenance organizations (HMO)…

January Home Box Office, the pay television system available in a million homes, says for the first time in its five-year history, it is in the black. HBO is also known for its musical “Standing Room Only” specials. In recent months, it has presented complete concerts of Bette Midler, Helen Reddy and Gladys Knight. HBO now has more than 400 cable and master antenna affiliate systems located in 45 states. In 1976, it had close to 600,000 subscribers….  So far, about 2,175,000 microwave ovens have been sold since they first came out in 1970.

April - AM music stations are losing audience to FM stations. It's a trend that started earlier this decade - but the numbers are very noticable. WABC - New York - is about to get wiped away by WKTU - an FM station that's just about to swtich to disco music. UHF stations are less desirable because reception is more difficult due to higher frequencies. December - Magnavox says it has begun test-marketing a “video disc” system using laser beams to show full-length movies on home TV sets. Prerecorded discs play on an optical videodisc player that attaches to a home television set. The videodiscs are groove less and resemble a record. The test is being conducted in the Atlanta area… Has the CB craze peeked? - The FCC says there has been a sharp drop of CB (Citizen Band) license applications. Figures show only 106,000 people applied for new licenses last month. That compares with 465,983 applications in January. An FCC survey indicates CBS radio operators own an average of 1.5 radios each or 20 million radios. ..

Cable TV - Premium service Showtime switches from the cassette system of delivering films and other entertainment features to programs beamed from satellite. $85,000 was spent to build and earth station in South Toledo, location of Buckeye Cablevision (owners of Showtime)… News the cable show… All news channel - The Cable News Network of Turner Communications projects a service offering programming 24 hours a day, exclusive for cable TV, with full “network quality” live newscasts produced in professional news studios by January 1, 1980.
