Elton John says he’s through with glitter. Also - he gets inducted into Madison Square Garden’s Hall of Fame - a first for a rock singer… Country Music Assn. awards - Ronnie Milsap is named entertainer of the year and male vocalist of the year. Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn’s younger sister, was chosen female vocalist of the year. “Lucille” by Kenny Rogers is song of the year and single of the year… Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and five other persons die when a chartered plane carrying the Lynyrd Skynard band apparently ran out of fuel and crashed in a swampy area near McComb, MS. August - RCA says it will begin offering home video recorders - priced at $1000 by Christmas. Called “SelectaVision” - buyers will be able to record up to four hours on a single cassette tape. Currently - there is a lawsuit brought by Universal and Walt Disney studios against Sony Corp, charging that such machines can infringe on motion picture copyrights and is still unresolved. RCA maintains the suit has no merit… General Electric says it will pursue development of harvesting kelp off of California for conversion to methane gas…

September - The Associated Press and United Press International say they will begin an experiment to transmit their data by satellite by the end of this month. Both companies depend on landlines from AT&T - but the company wants to increase rates by $4.3 million. If successful, the companies, along with the American Newspaper Publishers Assn will likely lobby the FCC for approval for receiving equipment at more than 8000 newspapers and broadcasters around the country. Executives of the services say their leased AT&T phone lines will amount to $17.2 million by next year - including the rate increase. Comparable satellite delivery would cost only $6.2 million….

November - A hand-held X-ray machine that produces an instant image has been developed by a scientist who got the idea when studying the energy sources in space. NASA announced the device, saying it had high potential for emergency and other held use in medicine, dentistry and industry… Warner Cable Corp inaugurates service in what company officials say is the most extensive and ambitious test yet of cable TV’s touted potentials, Called Qube, the interactive system will be available to 100,000 homes  in the Columbus (OH) area. Much of Qube’s programming also will be original. A children’s series called Pinwheel, aimed at preschoolers will run each day on one channel. The system has 30 channels…
