The book will be published June 8 by Simon and Schuster… John Lennon makes a lot of trouble at the famed Troubadour in Hollywood. The Smothers Brothers were entertaining, but a drunk Lennon kept heckling the act. Estranged from wife Yoko, he was with companion May Pang and singer Harry Nilsson. According to college student Kevin Breslin, Peter Lawford  was sitting behind Lennon and “told Lennon to shut up or get out.” More than once, the Beatle yelled “I’m John Lennon” as the Smothers did their act. Finally, Smothers’ manager Ken Fritz asked Lennon to stop, and John stood up to take a swing at him - Fritz swung back. Then Lennon picked up a glass and threw it, missing Fritz but hitting a waitress and overturning a table. She later filed charges against Lennon at a local police station… Elvis Presley (39) gives his first concert in Memphis in 13 years. In a glittering white jumpsuit he told the audience -  “Hello Memphis, it’s  good to be home”… The Grand Ole Opry is performed at the famed  Ryman auditorium in Nashville for the last time.  On  hand in front of 4000 fans - President Nixon along with Roy Acuff and a slew of  stars. Those albums were “Planet Waves” and “Before the Flood.” David Geffen, who wooed the singer to his Asylum label, had no comment on Dylan’s desertion…Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band play on the West Coast this week. The band was the opening act at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, and Springsteen felt the 45 minutes they got to play was all too short. Their first two albums have sold modestly - “Greetings From Asbury Park” and “The Wild The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle” but have received great reviews from critics (especially Springsteen’s songwriting). January 1 - Rose Parade violence - the worst violence in the 85-year history of the Rose Parade is recorded with two murders, a near-fatal stabbing and 245 arrests, according to local police… President Nixon signs legislation aimed at forcing states to reduce their speed limits to 55mph, saying the lower limit would save 200,000 barrels of fuel a day…U.S. population – 211.7 million… Personally rejecting Senate Watergate committee subpoenas for nearly 500 White House tapes, President Nixon says he views the subpoenas “as an overt attempt to intrude into the executive to a degree that constitutes an unconstitutional usurpation of power”… Daylight savings time returns early - this Saturday to save energy. It’s the first time since WWI…

January 8 -Curbing rationing - Federal energy officials are asking refineries to reduce gasoline production by 15% from original 1974 production plans… Inflation spiral - Surging food and fuel costs drive wholesale prices 2.2% in December - giving 1973 an 18.2% rise in prices on average - the worst in 27 years. One stat says inflation added $1,100 last year to average middle-income family expenses…Herb Klein, former White House communications director suggests that the television industry cut back on its broadcasting hours to help save energy. Klein also suggested that radio stations reduce broadcast power and newspapers cut back on editions to help save newsprint and the energy used to run presses…

January 15 - In a 15-minute live radio broadcast from the White House, President Nixon calls for continued effort to conserve fuel and promised “everything in my power” to avoid rationing.” “Your government has a responsibility to prepare for the worst ... But with continued cooperation by everyone, we all have good reason today to hope for the best.” He described the energy shortage as “genuine” and “potentially dangerous.” He said he would do all he could do to hold down oil prices - which have tripled in the last five months…

February 1 - After 84 days - Skylab 3 splashes down and it marks the longest time in space for a U.S. spacecraft (so far)… Secretary of State Henry Kissinger says that several Arab countries will propose an end to the oil embargo and he’s quite optimistic they will succeed… Long gasoline lines - One gas station owner said he put up an appointment book so his regulars wouldn’t feel left out. His lines are gone and he is booked for “gasoline” appointments days in advance. He has a big sign that says -“Gas By Appointment Only.” Less gasoline - The latest AAA “fuel gauge report” says 16% of the 5,170 stations surveyed this week were out of fuel, compared with 5% last week. It seems everyone is talking rationing…

February 8 -  Fuel shortage - An Associated Press sampling of 92 major cities throughout the U.S. shows that gasoline lines are nonexistent in 52 of them. But if you live in New York, Chicago, Bridgeport, Hartford, Portland (Ore), Eugene (Ore), Baltimore or Tucson, you are likely to wait an hour or more before getting any gas for your car. Overall, the eastern section of the country seems to have the longest lines…

The Hearst Corp. says it will put the additional $4 million into a food-for-the-poor  project if Patricia Hearst is released unhurt. This was announced after Randolph  Hearst said he personally could not guarantee the new demands… A U.S district judge orders Lt. William Calley Jr. freed on $1,0000 bail pending a  review of his conviction for murdering at least 22 Vietnamese civilians at the hamlet of My Lai…   President Nixon declares that the energy crisis is past but that the problem  remains, that lines at gas stations “will become shorter in the spring and  summer.” Also, prices will not drop until supplies pick up…  More oil – The Shah of Iran, interviewed on “60 Minutes,” said that Americans were buying more foreign oil than ever, certainly not less….
