It’s basically a soft, swinging 2-4 samba rhythm. The tempo has a much more even 4-4 feeling than the heavily accented samba beat. The drums supply subtle back beats accenting up-beats in the rhythmic pattern. The term Bossa Nova seems to have no direct literal translation, but it’s been popularly interpreted to mean “something new” and “new beat.” In one of the most recent developments, jazz flutist Herbie Mann is in Brazil for three weeks, to study the Bossa Nova situation first hand. A concert at Carnegie Hall November 21 includes a number of top Brazilian stars: Joao Gilberto, The Oscar Neves Quartet, Jose Paulo, Carmen Costa and Bolasete…

nat king cole celebrates 25 years music trivia timeline mrpopculture imageNovember - Nat King Cole celebrates 25 years in the music business. “I guess some people would sit back and rest on their laurels after having a successful career. Not me. I want to keep building. If you don’t give yourself plenty to do, you go stale ... A lot of artists will tell you that the hit record is just a way of getting off the ground. The kids are doing it with all types of things if they don’t have a limbo pole - sweaters, hankies, things like that…. Records - The best selling album this week is Vaughn Meader’s “The First Family.” The album is a spoof of the White House - with Meader imitating the voice of President Kennedy. The White House is having a small problem with the spoofs. Disc Jockeys across America are playing short excerpts of it, sometimes without explaining the spoofing nature. As a result, the White House has received hundreds of letters asking what in the world the President was doing talking that way right on the air for all to hear. Those listeners apparently thought they actually heard the voice of Mr. Kennedy on the air making the hilarious remarks… the White House is a little concerned about the “First Family” album. Its getting a lot of letters from radio listeners believing what they are hearing on the radio is actually the President. Some DJ’s are not identifying the spoofing nature when playing cuts from the popular album. Some actually believe it is President Kennedy himself saying those unusual remarks…

cuba missle crisis october 1962 history facts mrpopculture timeline kennedyOctober 15The Cuban crisis in order this week ... The Defense Department quietly begins a buildup of air defenses in the southeastern United States as a counter to the Communist military build-up in Cuba. The action includes assignment of an increased number of powerful Air Force and Navy jet fighters in the area. Vice Adm. E.W. Grenfell, addressing the American Ordnance Assn., warns that a growing Communist maritime force includes not only commercial ships but also submarines and intelligence trawlers in Cuba and off America’s eastern coast. Large scale movements of U.S. Marines are reported in the Florida Keys and at Marine bases in the South. The movements are believed to be in connection with the Cuban situation. Official Washington wraps itself in one of the tightest cloaks of secrecy ever seen in peacetime while key policy makers work out a major international decision they are forbidden to discuss. President Kennedy orders a blockade of Cuba to halt the buildup of Soviet-made missiles that could inflict mass destruction on every nation in the Americas. The President announced that the United States would turn back ships hauling offensive weapons Cuba. He also pledged full retaliation against the Soviet Union if a single nuclear missile is fired from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere. The United States throws a search-or-sink blockade around Cuba, forcing an immediate showdown with 25 Soviet ships steaming toward the island. Carriers, cruisers, destroyers and planes are ordered to halt shipments of Soviet-made missiles, bombs and other offensive military equipment and weapons. An order of force is to be invoked only against ships, which refuse to submit to search and seizure Prime Minister Fidel Castro called President Kennedy’s blockade of Cuba the act of a pirate and declares that anyone who tries to carry out an arms inspection in Cuba “had better come ready for combat...Our arms are defensive. We will acquire the arms we feel like acquiring and we don’t have to give an account to the imperialists. Cuba has the  right to arm itself and defend itself and we have had to do so. What would have occurred if we had not armed at the time of Giron Beach?” (Scene of the Bay of Pigs in 1961.) ....The Soviet Union is believed to have ordered a number of Communist merchant ships en route to Cuba to return to their homeports, according to the Defense Department. He added that no boarding of any ships “has yet been necessary.” Soviet Premier Khrushchev calls for a summit meeting, urging that the United States stay its hand in the Cuban crisis to quench the threat of thermonuclear war. He said the Soviet Union will make no reckless decision but will act if the United States carries out “piratic actions.”

October 22 - The Cuban Missile Crisis in order this week:

cuba missle crisis facts history october 22 1962 mrpopculture timeline kennedyThe United States makes it clear that it will not withdraw its blockade from Cuba as long as weapon-laden Soviet ships head for the Communist island and the buildup of missile bases continues. Most weekly and monthly Civil Defense air raid siren tests are suspended around the country - in small and big towns. Officials say that it could easily lead to confusion by the public during the current international tension.

Moving to a dangerous point, the United States announces that the ballistic missile buildup in Cuba is moving at a “rapid pace.” Presidential Press Secretary Salinger discloses that U.S. surveillance over Cuba shows the Communists are attempting to place their missiles at “full operational capability as soon as possible.” U.S. destroyers halt, board and search Cuba-bound Soviet supply ships. The Soviet-chartered Lebanese freighter Marcula is allowed to continue after finding no prohibited material in cargo.

Cuban Premier Castro offers to stop construction of major military facilities in Cuba if the U.S. lifts its blockade.

Premier Khrushchev announces that he has ordered Soviet officers in Cuba to stop work on rocket bases there and crate up their missiles and ship them home. As war appeared averted, President Kennedy calls the act a step toward peace. Premier Castro demands that the United States give up its Guantanamo Bay naval base as a guarantee that Cuba will be safe from aggression.

The United States lifts its arms blockade of Cuba and suspends aerial surveillance of missile bases amid growing indications that Russia has halted construction of the bases in Cuba. Next day - President Kennedy orders resumption of the U.S. naval blockade and air surveillance of Cuba. Acting UN Secretary General Thant returns from Havana with assurances that the dismantling of Soviet missile bases in Cuba will be completed in a few days.

Prime Minister Castro shouts that he never will accept inspection in Cuba to verify removal of Soviet missile bases. He admits that Cuba has had differences with the Russians, who have agreed to international inspection of the dismantling and removal of Soviet rockets. Khrushchev bypassed Castro in advising President Kennedy he would withdraw Soviet missiles under inspection.

February -  Gigacycle computers possible - at a news conference held by the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, technical data is discussed concerning the possibility of computers operating as fast as a gigacycle - 1000 times faster than current computers. According to the technical papers, the computer must be very small and must be contained in a box whose maximum dimension does not exceed six inches (present megacycle computers are so large that a building must be erected to contain them). Since gigacycle computers will be faster than present big computers by a factor of about 1,000, they can use fewer components to do a particular job – thus the shrinkage factor may be possible. The first gigacyle computer might be built late next year and will use transistor-like components called tunnel diodes. telstar launched july 1962 tech history facts timeline mrpophistoryJuly -  The United States launches the world’s first international communications satellite. Named “Telstar,” the $1 million bird is designed as a “switchboard in the sky” for instantaneous global radio and television programs. Scientists say the electronic sphere will be in an orbit ranging from 600 miles to 3,500 miles above the Earth. Telstar should circle the planet once every two hours and 20 minutes. Programs beamed from the satellite will be available for only around 15 minutes, before Telstar disappears from the horizon. Ground stations will have to track the sphere as it glides across the sky. Scientists say that, if all goes well, a string of satellites like Telstar could be placed in the sky to provide uninterrupted transmissions of television and radio programs. NASA was paid $2.7 million for the launching of Telstar, which is a product of AT&T. Telstar beams television pictures from overseas for the first time. American viewers looked at broadcasts from France and Britain. ABC and NBC interrupt their afternoon schedules for a half hour to record the momentous event live.

As seen on the home screen - the program beamed from France had remarkable definition and the voices were exceptionally clear…. At an engineering conference on the West Coast, placing a Telstar satellite 22,300 miles out in space is planned. Said one engineer - “If you get a satellite out that far, you can get it to rotate around the Earth at the same speed that the earth is rotating around on its axis.. Under these conditions it is theoretically possible to have a satellite out there which appears stationary because as the Earth turns the satellite is also turning at the same speed ... It is a pretty delicate feat to achieve. The satellite has to be in the  plane of the equator. It has to be at the right altitude and it has to be at the right velocity.” The Telstar satellite launched in July was set in an orbit around 3000 miles from Earth. It spins faster than the Earth, so television programs can be beamed for only around 15-20 minutes. In addition, the giant satellite antenna must track or move along the beam of the sending satellite as programs are received. At that orbit, it would take many satellites to broadcast a continuous stream. A stationary satellite would eliminate those problems…

Radio news -  Is Rock ‘n’ Roll disappearing from the New York City Airwaves? ... or disappearing altogether? ... Last week, two New York City radio stations dropped the format, moving toward a much softer music approach. WINS – 1010 was the first. Apparently the station tried to get a jump on a competitor – WMGM (1050) - which dropped Top-40 and changed its call letters back to WHN. WINS, which is one of New York’s top-rated stations, is probably taking the biggest chance. WINS was the first station to introduce top-40 to New York City in 1957, but the station was plagued by payola and the new format doesn’t have WINS radio goes soft music march 1962 radio history trivia timeline mrpopculturethose pressures. Attracting more advertisers to WINS with its new format is also an issue (see below). Easy listening / middle of the road radio is dominated in New York City by WNEW (1130) and WPAT (930). It’s also played by WCBS (880) and WNBC (660) during certain times of the day; many suburban stations also employ the format WINS is featuring a playlist closer to WNEW - Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme etc. WHN’s format is more lush – more instrumental - closer to WPAT. WNEW takes in the largest chunk of radio advertising in New York - and has done so for some time. The Top-40 holdouts in New York City are WMCA (570) and WABC (770). To be sure - WINS will keep rock ‘n’ roll on at night. Nighttime DJ Murray the K is the biggest evening disc jockey in the city. Some “teen” records will be heard in daytime hours on WINS, but the faster pace of the WINS sound has disappeared…. Paul Ackerman of Billboard Magazine says that most record manufacturers and many broadcasters are adding more kinds of music and de-emphasizing rock ‘n’ roll, but says the craze has not noticeably subsided. Top-40 has softened over the years and to some, its longevity is being questioned. Mr. Ackerman says that compared to early rock ‘n’ roll, today’s records offer a higher degree of musicianship. Violins, once anathema on rock ‘n’ roll records, are now being added. Other classical instruments are being heard with more sophisticated arrangements…

ted steele wins radio ny manager soft music radio history march 1962 timeline mrpopcultureTed Steele of WINS says he believes that other rock stations will do the same thing. One of the reasons he switched WINS was because of advertiser revolt to the pop format. Because WINS is a New York station, advertisers on Madison Ave, “Can monitor us anytime they want by just turning on their sets. There has been a growing client resistance to the hard rock format.” Even through WINS was on top of the ratings, Steele points out agencies with food, automotive and other such accounts were avoiding advertising on the station completely. “Doors are now opening to better agencies that were pretty well closed before.” He figures he is losing his 9-12 year-old audience almost completely, but he also feels that he has picked up in the area of adult and college listeners. “The family won’t take it all day (of rock), but the moderate programming technique holds a  broader and larger group for a longer time”…

Singer Jerry Butler says, despite of rock ‘n’ roll being “on the way out” by some radio stations, kids will stick to it. Butler (22), sings, writes, arranges and publishes material, mostly in the rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues idioms.“Teenagers have found something they like and it will be hard for the business to dictate to them.” Butler says if radio stations begin to drop rock, the kids will simply go where they can get it. “Americans have distorted their sense of values as to what music is. Our heritage goes back to folk music and there weren’t many great or well-known writers then in music People just sang what they felt and, in that sense, rhythm and blues is modern folk music for the teens.” “This is today’s Tin Pan Alley. If Cole Porter came up now, he’d be writing rock ‘n’ roll”…

The FCC says it will not renew the license of KRLA (1110) in Pasadena, Calif. The commission found that the station had allowed improper and allegedly fraudulent contests to be broadcast and that the station owners had deliberately tried to “mislead” and “hoodwink” the commission as it looked into the station operation. KRLA is one of Los Angeles’ top radio stations. It programs top-40 music…

Interesting, because WINS only recently began to add more rock records and almost has the same mix as it did before it slowly added softer music last fall.
