Berlin Wall/Berlin Crisis Events In Order – Weeks Of August 8 and August 15, 1961…

berlin crisis 1961 facts history info timeline mrpopculture imageThe Communists bar East Germans from West Germany - either to work or visit – in an attempt to dam the flow of refugees to the West. West Berlin has been the main escape hatch for East Germans in increasing numbers. Before the closing, 3,000 moved across the border. An estimated 80,000 East Berliners commute to the western sector daily to work. East Berlin Mayor Friedrich Ebert signed a decree forbidding them from holding jobs in West Berlin. Western powers have challenged the right of free movement within the city. An American spokesma called the Communist action “a most grave violation of the four-power status and the agreements on free circulation in Berlin.”

Tensions swell in a divided Berlin following a series of violent outbursts over the Communist erection of an iron Curtain that halted the flow of refugees and other eat Germans to West Berlin. Angry West Berliners battle with Communist peoples’ police and troops during the night at several points along the 25-mile- long border between East and West Berlin. The Communists pour thousands of troops into their part of the city, mobilized the militia and reinforced police to seal off the border and quell and possible uprising of East Berliners.

berlin august 1961 facts history mrpopculture timelineThe situation in Berlin is described as being close to a civil war as tension mount on both sides of the East-West sector border. One of the most serious clashes occurred in the Kreuzberg district in the American sector of West Berlin. Reds, yielding clubs, hurled tear and smoke bombs - beating back about 1,000 youths advancing toward their barbed-wire fence.

The Kennedy administration denounces the border closing as a flagrant violation of Soviet agreements with the western powers, saying it “will be the subject of a vigorous protest through appropriate channels.”

The Soviet press explains to the Russian people the East Berlin border was sealed off to keep western “spies and saboteurs” out of East Germany. Army newspaper Red Star, Communist Party newspaper Pravda and the official Tass news agency joined in warning that there must be renewed vigilance to keep “subversives” from East Germany.

A Moscow radio broadcast heard in London said East Germany would reopen its borders “when a peaceful settlement with Germany is reached.” Maps in newspapers now show a distinct border between East and West Germany, reinforced by barbed wire and armed troops. Sealing the border has slowed the movement of refugees, prevented East Berlin workers from commuting to jobs in West Berlin and raised war fears. One photo shows a West Berlin couple talking to an East Berlin couple with East German soldiers looking on.

Two hundred thousand angry West Berliners mass around the city hall to join Mayor Willy Brandt in a demand that the western allies take immediate action against the Communist barring of the route from East to West Berlin. The Communist rulers of East Germany ignore western protests against the forcible division of Berlin and give every indication they are ready to fight for their barbed wire barricades.

Gloria Lambert and Leslie Uggams are featured. Miller is currently the artists and repetoire (a & r) man at Columbia Records. His nine “Sing Along With Mitch” albums have sold 4.5 million copies. Miller says there’s almost a limitless supply of songs people like to sing, “People make such a personal project out of this. They write me long letters with lists of 50 or 60 songs they want included in the next album. They remind me of songs I’ve forgotten. Whenever we find the same song appearing on several of these lists, we include it.” Miller, who will be 50 this year, was never known to enjoy rock n roll music; you’ll hear none of it on his record label - Columbia. He says the show will contain none of it: “No one listens to it but kids 8 to 14. After 14, they out grow it. It never amounted to much - at its best, it represented from 10% to 12% of the total record market. Today it accounts for from 8% to 10% of record sales. Alan Freed’s tour will kick-off at the Hollywood bowl June 25 with a bill featuring the Shirelles, Etta James, Brenda Lee, Bobby Vee, Gene McDaniels, the Ventures, the Fleetwoods, Clarence Henry, the Innocents, Kathy Young and Jerry Lee Lewis... Freed just signed a contract with Polysonics Inc, a syndicate of non-music business investors who have put together over $200,000 to back a new venture.

Alan Freed will emcee and package a series of large scale, one-nighter shows, featuring pop talent. The Hollywood Bowl concert is the first of these concerts…

alan ffeed kday los angeles news 1961 radio music history facts mrpopcultureAlan Freed charges “the meager salaries paid to disk jockeys on the (West) Coast is a serious cause for the continued accusations that payola still exists.” Freed further explains that deejays on the eastern seaboard average $275-$300 weekly plus what they can make from individual promotion activities and appearances, while Los Angeles and San Francisco jocks make only $150 weekly and “are under constant scrutiny.” Freed says the average deejay “must become a promoter, using his radio audience as a wedge to get a blockbuster attendance at an attraction he presents on his own time and with his own money.” Freed says he’s always been a promoter. He just signed with Polysonics Inc. to produce 60 one-niters nationally, the first to be held at the Hollywood Bowl in June. He’s also lined up New York’s Polo Grounds for a rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza in August. Freed says he can keep most of the top rock ‘n’ roll stars busy if they’ll work for a reasonable figure. Freed works on guarantee plus percentage.

Freed - continued - “Some singers have zoomed skyward, in their own estimation at least and are not the drawing cards they think they are. I tried to get the Everly Brothers and went as high as $5,000. They told me they couldn’t get in touch with their manager and had to say no.” More Alan Freed - the state of radio – Freed claims that radio today has “turned from an adult medium to a juvenile medium” and that there “are too many commercials” between records. The so-called top- 40 stations are reducing the sales of single records “because they run the record into the ground and reduced radio to a state of chaos.”

The listener heard teasers for a special concert on June 25 but the commercials didn’t reveal what was going on. When the second phase of the campaign was to begin, revealing what was to transpire on that day, the station informed him it will have to drop his commercials because they conflicted with time contracted by local show promoter Hal Zeiger. KDAY began broadcasting commercials plugging the Zeiger show - for the same day – the 25th. So, to the listener, it sounded like the Freed’s€œteaser commercials were plugging the Zeiger show as well…

The FCC sent WINS a long letter setting forth numerous allegations of payola, which the station must explain within this 30 day period. Some of those allegations the Commission wants WINS to answer are:  “With respect to certain programs broadcast by (Alan) Freed … at least part of the line charges and engineers’ salaries were paid by a record distributor directly to the licensee (WINS).” “WINS received 10% of the profits of (Alan) Freed’s promotions which were advertised over the station and that the required sponsorship identification announcements were not made “WINS attempted to induce (Alan) Freed with record manufacturers and/or distributors whereby the latter would pay the licensee (WINS) directly for the broadcasting of records.” WINS is considered the number one pop music station in the country and the industry is watching this one…

bob dylan september 1961 music history NY times folk facts timeline mrpopcultureMore September 1961 Music news - Robert Shelton of the New York Times writes a glowing review of folk newcomer Bob Dylan (20), who has been appearing in various Greenwich Village folk spots since January. Shelton’s review is from a Dylan performance at Gerde’s Folk City. “Resembling a cross between a choir boy and a beatnik, Mr. Dylan has a cherubic look and a mob of tousled hair he partly covers with a Huck Finn black corduroy cap. His clothes may need a bit of tailoring, but when he works his guitar, harmonica or piano and composes new songs faster than he can remember them, there is no doubt, that he is bursting at the seams with talent…”
