Todd had invited Kirk Douglas and producer Joseph Mankiewitz to fly with him, but they declined… Elizabeth Taylor, at home in Beverly Hills, collapses in hysterical grief upon hearing the news. The station’s position has been one of a  third party, and a separate entity,  because the incidents involved the  non-radio activities of Mr. Freed”… It’s announced that Alan Freed, who resigned from WINS has been hired by WABC radio, for a local, six-nights-a-week show and it should begin June 2. It’ll  air from 7:15-11:00p. Freed doesn’t have a TV deal, but WABC-TV has first take.  If not, he may go to WABD-TV. Freed had been talking to WNTA, WNEW and his  old station WINS before the WABC deal. In another action, the court struck down a $100 thousand fine levied against the NAACP by an Alabama judge, who imposed the fine in 1956. It’s able to transmit both sound and picture without ground connections in regular hourly on-the-spot telecasts from sites of immediate news importance. Regular airings of these remote broadcasts will be scheduled hourly from 7pm to 11pm with cut-ins ranging from two to five minutes. KTAL is adding at least two additional news commentators and four remote crew workers to handle the increased slate of news coverage … CBS unveils a “compatible” stereo record, but other record companies aren’t looking up to it. April -  Ford Motor Company presents model of a “wheel-less” vehicle. In the presentation, engineers described it as a new form of high-speed land transportation; probably in the field of rail surface travel and that full-size “Glideair” vehicles could be operational in the foreseeable future… Stereo - all labels are talking about releasing stereo albums. It’s the big talk in audio these days. This week, ABC-Paramount announces its will releasing six stereo albums. Columbia Records says it will go along with the so-called 100% stereophonic record, which is strongly advocated by rival RCA Victor Records. The problem so far has been no stereo record standard and this could help. 

May - Freeways in the Sky – The government plans to establish five airways across the country in which all planes would have to fly under instrument flight rules to cut the risk of collisions. Civil Aeronautics Administrator James Pyle said his agency hopes to put the system into effect by September 21. The airways will be set up in altitudes ranging from 17,000 to 22,000 feet. Within these airways, planes will have to operate under instrument flight rules and any planes crossing them would have to get clearance from the Civil Aeronautics Administration… President Eisenhower inaugurates NBC-TV's new color studios in Washington DC - Video/WRC-TV. NBC said its station had “less than half the audience of either of the two Buffalo VHF stations.” What’s interesting is, NBC said that a promotion campaign getting people interested in the station found 80% of all Buffalo TV sets had the capability of UHF, but presumably, not all owners took advantage. Buffalo’s other two TV stations are WGR-TV (channel 2) and WBEN-TV (channel 4)… Stereo - Randy Wood’s Dot Records will release its first stereophonic albums in August… Capitol Records unveils its new 1959 line of hi-fi phonographs equipped for stereo sound…

The days of mailing actualities by film is gone. It took too long and was costly… Station KTTV (Los Angeles) and Ampex demonstrate the possibilities of using video tape for advertisers. KTTV is shooting the syndicated “Divorce Court” on videotape - the first time anyone has done so with a TV series. Also, Ampex demonstrated a prototype editing device. A section of tape recorded shortly before was cut and rejoined the playback revealed a clean edit - no rollover of the picture…

August - There’s a strong rumor that Philadelphia’s channel 12, WIBG-TV is about to dark. Owner Storer is seeking to sell the Wilmington station for $1.8 million but can find no buyers. A national educational TV group is reported to be planning to ask the FCC to set the channel aside for the Philadelphia area. (It will be gone by September 14)… Music news - RCA Victor says it is breaking into the stereo-singles market with records by Perry Como and Henri Rene. The stereo singles will be priced at $1.15 while mono 45’s are about 98cents. Last week, MGM moved into the stereo-single with a Joni James record…

September - The Veteran’s Administration announces a portable device which enables the blind to read ordinary books and magazines. The station uses its call letters wisely, stressing its Very Important Programming serving Very Influential People for “variety, information and pleasure all day.” WVIP is co-owned by Martin Stone, who worked on such TV shows as Howdy Doody, Gabby Hayes and Super Circus. The other owner is E. Monroe O’Flyn - a sort of real estate baron in the area. The station plays easy music with local news. WVIP has taped station breaks voiced by the likes of Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Gabby Hayes, Patti Page and others… Interesting - WOR radio in New York is going to carry the games of the Philadelphia Phillies, but is having a hard time getting sponsors. They’re committed to broadcasting 78 games… WNEW radio in New York becomes the last of the NY independent stations to drop live musicians from the staff. The station still does a few live music shows and would like to hire musicians on a spot basis… Disc Jockey convention in Kansas City - The gist is that owners of radio stations are restricting the DJ’s to tighter formats or “formula radio.” About 1,000 DJ’s attended the two-day conference. More Radio News – March 1958 – Network Radio news - Robert Sarnoff, president of NBC, says its radio network has lost about $9 million since 1953, but expects it to comeback. He says NBC-radio’s losses were less last year than the previous year, and the break-even point may be attained soon. The ABC radio network is undergoing reorganization in an effort to reduce losses that have amounted to more than $2 million a year. This week, ABC drops all its weekday entertainment type of programs except one. ABC radio will now concentrate on building its newscasts. Since around 1953 - all of the major radio networks have lost money, but things are looking better. Broadcasting Magazine estimates that the four major radio networks collectively had a 9.8% increase in net time sales in 1957. Meantime, some independent stations are doing much better. Advertising is up on  major music stations, whose primary programs are manned by disc jockeys…

It gave me a great feel for the business.” Of Paul Anka, Costa says, “Paul came to me first just to let me hear some of his songs. I liked the way he sang them and we made a record out of his ‘Diana.’ Then we got lucky again when we switched the style and did, ‘You Are My Destiny.’ Paul is a great kid. They say according to contestant Herbert M. Stempel that even though he said he received answers in advance and in other cases and was forced to miss questions against contender Charles Van Doren (back on Dec 5, 1956), he said later the accusations were “baseless and untrue and were part of a blackmail scheme to extort a large sum of money from the firm Barry & Enright.” Stemple says otherwise: “Their statement is entirely false and malicious. I never attempted blackmail I’ve never confessed to anything except that 21 was fixed”… Howard Stempel said he won a total of $49,500 before he lost Charles Van Doren. What’s interesting is, “21” was so popular by 1957, NBC decided to purchase Barry & Enright for $4.8 million. Not only did the network get “21” but five other properties. Jack Barry and Dan Enright continue to co-produce “21” which features Mr. Barry as master of ceremonies. And another - The Rev. He tells me. “Do you think any kind is going to buy what he can hear on the radio ‘til it’s coming out his ears.” Another thing asserts Lorenz, “With this kind of programming, it’s harder than ever for an artist to get off the ground, because it’s only hits that the stations play and practically nothing else. A new artist hardly has a chance. And the record companies can’t open their mouths. If they do, let them try ever to get another record played.
