February - At Bartlesville, OK - a movie theater chain picks this town for an experiment in whether families are willing to pay $9.50- a-month to have first run Hollywood pictures piped into their TV sets. Video Independent Theaters, which operates more than 150 movie houses and drive- ins throughout the Southwest, will invest some $300,000 to test the idea. A survey in the area said 15 out of 24 would take the service if offered. Bartlesville subscribers will receive approximately 13 first-run movies each month. They will be carried by cable from a downtown studio. The shows will run continuously from noon to midnight, with newsreels and short subjects like any movie program. “We will run trailers on coming attractions, but no commercials” said a spokesperson. People with color sets will receive color films in color. The company says it will lose money in the beginning, but believes 3,000-4,000 Bartlesville homes will have theater service eventually. The FCC has said it would undertake a study of subliminal perception as soon as possible and take such action is it deems warranted. Subliminal Projections Inc. - a company promoting the system, says it will work with the FCC….ABC says it is experimenting with its New York station - WABC with a new compatible AM transmission - one that eliminates both sidebands and places much of the audio on to one side band (single sideband). This would reduce interference in the fringe areas where sky wave and ground waves collide, causing distortion…Television news - Videotape is being introduced in a prime-time network series as CBS-TV’s “Climax” will be recorded entirely on tape (albeit a single episode). “Shadow of a Memory” starring Ann Todd and Alex Nicol will be taped then broadcast on December 26. When a Russian finally saves enough to pay for a car, he tells the auto people about it and is assigned a number designating his place in the waiting line. Then, the prospective auto owner must make periodic visits to the salesroom and check the bulletin board to see which numbers have been called. When his number comes up, he pays for the car and then settles down to wait four, five or six or as much as 10 months for the more popular makes. In London, viewers saw an unusual live broadcast with blues songstress Pearl Bailey. During the show, she began unraveling the cable from her microphone saying to the band “you go on vamping while I unwind it,” Later, she asked a cameraman to help her off the stage, ordered the band to keep quiet for a violin solo and danced with one of the audience. A spokesman said Ms. Bailey had gone on the air with so many sedatives in her that he whole reactions were slowed down… Finally, Pittsburgh, PA will get its second TV station and it should be on the air by this summer. Look for the debut of WIIC (channel 11) soon… Gary Cooper will make his regular TV debut in an hour CBS show as host- narrator. Cooper had been on an ABC-TV series. While in London, Frankie and his group will cut 12 sides for a new Gee album “Frankie Lymon and the Teen- Agers at the London Palladium.” The Alan Freed movie featuring the group, “Rock, Rock, Rock” opens in London at the same time… Singing star Webb Pierce departs from WSM’s “Grand Ole’ Opry after a hassle with station execs over Pierce’s alleged refusal to pay commissions on bookings and accompanying services…Phenomenal radio success - WPAT, Paterson NJ has a unique format. It plays easy instrumental music with little DJ interruption. All commercials and announcements are concentrated on station break time - about 4 times an hour. The result - the station’s ratings have increased 39% over the past year and national advertising has increased almost 100% during the same time period. And, it may be syndicating its nightly “Gaslight Revue” to other stationsAlan Freed and publisher/promoter/record man Morris Levy part ways. The upcoming Brooklyn Paramount show, which will run for 10 days beginning April 19, will be their final joint effort. Said Freed - “We’re just going to mutually dissolve and silently steal away into the night.” Freed now intends to go at his concert business alone. Freed also indicated that he expects to begin his own record company. Originally, he was to participate in the new Roulette label, reportedly at the extent of 50%... Art Ford of WNEW radio stages an on air protest against restriction form air play of an established standard by its publisher. The song is “The Man I Love” and the restriction was asked by its publisher. It could have been restricted because it is being used in a forthcoming Warner Brothers picture and a CBS-TV musical drama, both based on the life story of singer Helen Morgan, who is so closely identified with the tune. They’ve been in trial separation for six months. Buddy Knox , who has a big hit with “Party Doll” is called to active duty as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Not to worry, producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore cut more than 20 sides with Knox “to insure Buddy’s recording career while he is on active duty.” The sides will be issued as singles and in albums during Knox’s term of service, presently estimated at six months.

He’ll also emcee his own half- hour TV show over ABC-TV May 4 and 11; following which he will ready a stage show at the New York Paramount Theater starting July 3. Good news for network radio. Ford Motor Co says it is going to spend a hefty $3 million beginning in the fall on network radio advertising. It’s the largest one-lump sum by one company in many years. Network radio has been losing money since 1953…

August – Radio news -  Herb Oscar Anderson will be featured on ABC radio beginning September 2 - live from the Terrace Room of the New York Hilton. The show will feature a 20-piece orchestra and singers. The show is the first under ABC’s new network radio policy – which says it is eliminating recorded programs. Philadelphia WFIL-TV’s “Bandstand” makes its national debut this week as “American Bandstand.”

It’s described as a 90-minute daytime program of recorded popular music, dance contests and interviews and sometimes live recording artists. The show has been presented in Philadelphia since 1952. Dick Clark is master of ceremonies. The show replaces ABC-TV’s feature film series titled “Afternoon Film Festival.” (Monday - August 5)...

NABET says the program is using local WFIL-TV employees instead of network union employees - depriving its members of work. Now at the top is Elvis Presley with “All Shook Up.” Next in line comes skiffler Lonnie Donegan with “Puttin’ On the Style,” followed by Elvis Presley’s “Teddy Bear.” Others on the bestseller list are the Everly Brothers “Bye Bye Love,” Pat Boone’s “Loveletters In The Sand,” Tommy Steele’s “Butterfingers” and Little Richard’s “Lucille.” Columbia Records says it is high on Jimmy Dean . The singing artist also has a morning show on CBS-TV. Look for a big push, according to Columbia head Mitch Miller… Arthur Berg, president of the National Association of dance and affiliated Artists predicts that rock ‘n’ roll and Elvis Presley are here to stay; “Sure, some of that rock ‘n’ roll stuff is sort of savage. But people like it. They want it. And they want Elvis Presley. They’ll be wanting rock ‘n’ roll and Elvis for many years to come.” Berg believes Presley will be around for a while, “But he’ll change his style. Before long, I think you’ll find he’ll swing to ballad style stuff. Country music star Jim Reeves will begin a daily afternoon (1 hour) radio show over ABC October 7. The show features Freed behind his WINS New York microphone from which point most of the action stems.
